SCHOOL TIME!!!

Classes I'm Taking Right Now

January 30, 2003

Tonight I went to my second meeting for Gaffer's Guild - the glass blowing club at ISU. Tonight we started to work with the glass. Can anyone say, "ouch!"? It's been two hours since I've had my hands near the funaces and the area between my index finger and thumb on my left hand still sting a bit... It's hard work! It looks sooooo easy - until you try it! Stand 3 inches away from a 1200 degree funace and let's see how you like it. It's insane; I was like "ow!" the whole time, with the three other girls and one guy - now I'm reflecting on my experience and can't wait to go back! Next week we can't leave the studio until we make "nice" snowmen. Hmm... doesn't mommy collect snowmen? :) We'll also learn how to make paper weights, and how to blow beautiful ornaments and dinnerware. Yay!

Tonight was the third meeting that I've attended. I wore my own goggles tonight - exciting, huh? Well, it was better than wearing the old icky scratched up ones that look like they're 30 years old! We had to make "snowmen" tonight before we left. It took me like 6 times before mine looked OK. It still looked like a hunchback - owell, Mommy will probably like it despite its "disorder". Next week we're going to learn how to better work with the glass. Derrick, our instructor, said that we'll be able to make flowers. But then said that making flowers would be easier to make than snowmen - so we tried making them tonight! I made one snowman and two flowers... and the flowers turned out pretty good! It reminded me of pulling taffy (even though I've never pulled taffy in my life) because it's thick like taffy and of that consistency. Guess what? I figured out how to keep my hand skin from scorching off! I just need to wear a long-sleeved shirt and when I'm gathering glass, I need to shake my sleeves over my thumbs - and that keeps them a lot cooler! :)
