L. K. Hua       華羅庚
China's father of modern mathematics
sometimes spelt Hua Luogeng

A self-taught who became a world known mathematician through an extremely hard and bitter struggle. In addition to his accomplishment in mathematical theories, Hua made earnest efforts to put the theories into production practice, scoring enormous economic and social benefits. He was an active advocate of "optimization method" and "overall planning method," which are employed by millions of people. Prof. Hua was also a great educator, who trained and brought up a great number of outstanding mathematicians in China.

The Hua Luogeng Prize was set up in 1992 in memory of the renowned Chinese mathematician Hua Luogeng. The award is now the highest honor in Chinese maths circles. The recipients of the first four Hua Luogeng Prizes were Chen Jingrun, Lu Qikeng, Gu Chaohao, Wan Zhexian, Yang Le, Zhou Yulin and Ding Xiaqi.

The 5th Hua LuoGeng Maths Prize went to Professor Jiang Boju from Beijing University and Professor Gong Sheng from the University of Science and Technology of China on Oct. 31. Both the prize winners have long been engaged in their own research fields of maths and have made outstanding contributions to the development of maths studies in China

Jiangsu Hua Luogeng High School (original name , Jintan High School) was established in 1922, and was chosen as a Provincial key high school in 1959 and in honor of the world outstanding mathematician

his life and his work see the Obituary of H. Halberstam in Acta Arith. 51, No. 2, 99-117 (1988).

Loo-keng Hua (Nov. 12, 1910 - June 12, 1985) was a famous and world wide known mathematician with a great number of important contributions to number theory, algebra, function theory of several complex variables, partial differential equations, mathematical physics and operations research, optimization etc.
He published more than 200 papers and 23 books, 9 of which were translated from Chinese into foreign languages. Loo-keng Hua was also known as a gifted teacher. Among his students are 5 Academicians of the Academia Sinica. For 32 years (1951-1983) he was the President of the Chinese Mathematical Society. Selected papers of Hua were published in 1983 by Springer (ed. H. Halberstam). His book "Starting with the Unit Circle" (Springer, 1981) is an example for the extraordinary way of thinking of Hua

Hua Luogeng: Outstanding Chinese Mathematician

¡¡¡¡Hua Luogeng was a famous Chinese mathematician, educator and social activist, who gave up excellent pay and condition abroad and returned home after the founding of New China.

¡¡¡¡Hua was the founder and pioneer of many fields in New China's mathematics research. He wrote more than 200 pieces of thesis and monographs, many of which have become classic documents of immortal value.

¡¡¡¡Besides pure mathematics research, Hua also did a lot of work in the fields of mathematics applications. He made the mathematics serve the national economy and become the first Chinese scientist who closely combined the mathematics theoretic studies and practical production, and obtained enormous economic results in many fields.
