Cao's research filed is muscle structural protein and nervous system protein. He discovered muscle globulin light chain and played a role in the study of muscle preservation of the ancient body in the Mawangdui grave of the Han Dynasty. He set up a series of analytic techniques for protein structure such as amino acid composition, terminal analysis, separation of peptide segments and sequence analysis, and for physical and chemical characteristics of proteins such as electrophoresis, diffusion, CD, and EM, which were used in the analysis of artificial synthesis of insulin. He also carried out studies on virus-pathageny of plants and put forward the scientific basis for quarantine of imported wheat.
