Now outline your doll. Sometimes when I want a little more shading, I will use a 2 or 3 pixel line size instead, but this is up to you. Now you can leave it this way and continue or you can blur the lines a bit to make it look softer. I generally prefer softer. To do this, I use Paint Shop's Gaussian Blur set to 1.00. (Go to "Effects", "Blur" "Gaussian Blur"....)
Now raise the opacity on the flood filled layer back up to 100% as seen above and you can delete your model if you like. We don't need her anymore.
Just a little bit more to go now. Let's add some highlights to the doll using the lightest shade in the colors you chose. Add a new raster later, name "Highlights", and using your paintbrush add highlights to the skin as seen below. My line size varies here from 1 to 4 pixels, depending on the size of the body part. The thighs obviously need a bit more paint than the ankles because there is more there to shade.
Now Blur this too using Gaussian Blur again. Work with the settings here. Sometimes you'll need it set at 1.00 like before, and then sometimes you'll need a bit more, like 1.99. Adjust this to suit yourself.
Now one last step and we're done. If you've noticed, I haven't merged the layers yet. This is because of any cleanup that might be needed, so now I'm going to Merge ONLY the Layers that we shaded and NOT the flood filled layer with the main part of the body on it. Turn that layer off, and Merge the Visible layers. Once this is done, you can go back and turn on your main body layer again, and select it. Do NOT invert it this time. Is your main body (flood filled) layer selected? Good. Now leave it selected and go to the merged layers...with the shading on it, and hit your "Delete" key on your keyboard. This should clear away any unwanted pixles from you doll. Now deselect, and Merge all your layers. And we're done.
