Picking Up the Pieces

Growing up poor has taught me a lot about life. Growing up without the love of at least one parent has taught me even more. But even though life can be hard, as long as you have one person who loves you, you have everything you need to succeed.

Deep down inside I always new that I was out of place in my ghetto community. I always knew that I was intelligent and there was more to life than just whining about a bad situation. I also knew that it took action to change, not complacency. Also I needed to be a role model for my son, who had developed a distaste for school. I felt that I could not influence his decision to finish high school and go on to higher education if I did not set the example myself.

I knew that I had something to offer the world, my compassion and my dedication for the underdog and the downtrodden and I felt that getting a degree could help me assist individuals in need much better.

About the book
“Picking Up The Pieces” is an inspiring book that was written to encourage and inspire others who are experiencing similar circumstances. While many people would have become bitter and cold after enduring such pain, the author chose the high road! She courageously ceased to be a victim.

The author is the third generation of not only a broken family, but also broken lives. Abandoned by both parents and left with her grandma whom she affectionately calls Ma, she grows up in the ghettos of Canada and endures the hardships of a hard life.

This book of painful, harsh, and then joyous memories covers everything from the loss of family, racism, prejudice, discrimination, love, loss, birth, and death to the day a cycle of lost women ended. It shows us friendships and relationships, the highs and lows, the misery and the healing, and the acceptance of a higher power who loves us in spite of it all.

There are times “Picking Up the Pieces” will break your heart. At times it will make you smile as you travel down her life’s highway. Carol’s sheer determination to never give will amaze you. Her determination to remember those times for the sake of others will inspire you.

This book will motivate anyone suffering through hard times, as they understand that they too can overcome any challenge and improve their life - if they persevere. Readers who have not had a tragic or difficult life will realize just how fortunate they have been. Possibly it will motivate them to reach out to those in need.

For Carol Roach lifted herself up, earned university degrees in spite of a learning disability, and created a life she could finally call her very own. She continues to touch readers with the beauty of her poetry and the wisdom of her prose. This book will bring each of you, no matter what your circumstances -hope to build on the precious things in your life.
