Harry Potter and the Lord of the Box Office

The latest film rendition of "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" scored $42 million in its first weekend alone, less than half of "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer Stone"'s Thanksgiving $90 million debut. But 42 with six zeros after it is still a sizeable number.

LOTR director Peter Jackson hoped people won't get blown away by the special effects of the film. But whether we liked it or not, whether we willed ourselves or not, we were blasted to bits by the most recent interpretation of J.R.R. Tolkien's beloved classic. And this is but the first installment of three.

"Life will never be the same!" ranted one.

"Ya, but it wasn't finished," said another.

Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings rocked (wow, that sounds like a good movie title) because of the terror attacks Sept. 11. It all ends and begins with that fateful Tuesday morning in New York City.

All films are forms of escape, as are books and any form of diversion that does not feed, clothe, shelter or inspire us. You wonder, had the terror attacks been thwarted, would flying broomsticks and pure-hearted quests have been as explosive, imminent, desperately needed or madly successful as they are now?
