SAN MATEO, Calif., April 15 -- eGroups dissolved into Yahoogroups, and now eCircles is to follow -- except this time, no company will absorb all the memories YFC uploaded there. The popular group file-sharing service permanently shut down April 15.
eCircles became a fertile source of YFC photos, news and gossip. If someone wanted to immediately broadcast a piece of information, one simply had to go to eCircles and post it there.
There are 453 YFC handles on "Youth for Christ," and another 211 handles on "Youth for Christ Two." Storage space alloted to the original YFC eCircle was always filled to capacity.
YFC Illinois, Dallas, NorCal and Toronto are few of the areas that have individual accounts, and many youths have personal accounts.
President and CEO Prescott Lee wrote in a memo at the Web site that a "market downturn" in the country's economy made it harder for them to keep up with the thousands of photoalbums and discussion groups in the site. Lee included instructions on how to download files and photos from the Web site.
The California-based firm did not provide an alternative group file-sharing server for users to turn to.
