Word comes from Greenpeace that Ford is feeling the heat of the 4000+ cyberactivists who've taken action urging Ford to publicly support the Kyoto Global Warming Treaty. Ford is furious that activists are targeting them to clean up their environmental act, arguing that they are doing everything that they can.

Greenpeace will be staging a national day of action today with activists leafletting Ford dealerships across the U.S. to educate consumers about Ford's role in killing the Kyoto Treaty. For those who'd like to participate in the leafletting, print out the "Ford: Driving Global Warming" flyer (Requires Adobe Acrobat Reader).

The U.S. Post Office spying for the federal government? Looks like "the next time you go to the Post Office to purchase a money order, you could get secretly reported to the federal government as a potential drug dealer, terrorist, or money-launderer." Nice, huh?

SPAM Not getting enough SPAM lately? No need to worry. Reva Networks are currently promoting their new product, Admail, to Internet Service Providers (ISP's) and free Web-based e-mail providers. With this product, online advertisers will be able to intercept all e-mail transmissions (including private e-mail) as they enter an e-mail provider's system and attach advertising content to them. Admail will basically embed ads to the body of any e-mail message. This product will allow ISP's and e-mail providers a way to "generate revenue from their e-mail services by providing an effective channel for advertisers to deliver content rich marketing messages to a demographically targeted audience."

But isn't this [SPAM] an invasion of our privacy, not to mention harassment? Well, not according to Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Rep. Gephardt (D-MO). According to them, they [companies] can "use their First Amendment rights to send unsolicited communication." First Amendment rights? Okay, so from now on I'll be forwarding my SPAM to both Senator Ron Wyden and Rep. Gephardt. Hey, it's my "First Amendment right to send unsolicited communication."

All interested parties can forward unwanted SPAM to Rep. Gephardt at gephardt@mail.house.gov. Senator Wyden can be reached at senator@wyden.senate.gov or senator_wyden@exchange.senate.gov.

According to a BBC News report, a U.S. scientist believes that the rate of destruction of the Amazon rainforest is so great that it [Amazon rainforest] could essentially disappear within 40 or 50 years. And if we don't do something about its destruction soon, the damage could be irreversible within 10 years.

Things didn't go as planned during the latest meeting of the committee that's investigating Echelon. Maurizio Turco, an Italian member of the European Parliament, charged that the committee's investigation into Echelon was nothing more than a smokescreen to draw attention away from their own system. According to Turco, "the Europeans set the whole thing up to distract attention while they set up their own system."

If the Europeans do indeed have their own system, this wouldn't come as a major surprise. If the U.S. and its partners are monitoring telephone calls, e-mails, and other forms of telecommunication transmissions, then it's feasible for other governments to have similar capabilities.

On May 8, the Ford Motor Company spent an estimated $200,000 on advertisements in USA Today, the New York Times, and the Financial Times professing its concern about global warming. Yet, Ford has said directly: it doesn't support the treaty. That's greenwashing.

The Ford Motor Company is also part of an industry lobbying group - the U.S. Council of International Business - which is backing President Bush's move to derail the only international effort to stop global warming - the Kyoto Treaty. Tell Ford to replace rhetoric with action and publicly support the Kyoto Treaty!

Since more and more site operators and net advertisers are placing these bugs to track and collect information about web surfers, this program comes at the right time.

Looks like the Bush Administration is trying to pay back those corporate sponsors who bought Bush his election. The Bush Administration joined lobbyists from several major biotechnology companies, most notably Monsanto, at the First Trilateral Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology to urge Mexico to allow the commercialization of gene-altered crops. Looks like the Bush Administration is willing to pollute our food supply on behalf of profiteering mega-corporations.

Do they need to be reminded of when an unapproved variety of engineered corn was planted and contaminated millions of bushels of natural corn last fall, leading to over 300 food product recalls?

When the Secure Digital Music Initiative (SDMI) issued a challenge to see if anyone could break its watermark technology "designed to prevent the unauthorized copying, sharing, and use of digital music," a team of researchers led by Princeton Professor Edward Felten accepted the challenge and defeated the watermark. But when Professor Felten decided to academically publish the findings, the SDMI and Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) threatened to sue him if the paper detailing how they circumvented the system was presented.

Now the Princeton scientist is suing the RIAA and the SDMI for violating his First Amendment rights. Scientists should not have to seek approval from the industry before they publish research. "Studying digital access technologies and publishing the research for our colleagues are both fundamental to the progress of science and academic freedom."

As we mentioned, Echobelly are back after a 3-year hiatus and they have a new album out entitled "People Are Expensive." So why the title "People Are Expensive?" According to frontwoman Sonya (Aurora Madan), "I bought an old fashion radio for Glenn (Johansson - lead guitar) and while flicking through the different stages he came across an interview with somebody talking about how much certain celebrities cost to hire for functions. I liked the idea of people being expensive, and the different meanings that the expression has."

The tracklist for "People Are Expensive" is:

The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) decided yesterday to postpone any increase in crude oil production because of ample crude inventories and stable and affordable prices. This decision comes even after Iraq has suspended deliveries under the U.N. oil-for-food program. Iraq's decision to withhold deliveries means that there'll be 5 percent less crude oil available to the world. This shortfall in supplies can only mean that gas prices will increase yet again in the face of increasing demand.

As for the U.S. (Reprise) release, it's now been determined that it will hit U.S. store shelves on October 16. Also, it's rumored that there will be (at least) one different track on the U.S. version of the album. The tentative track list is:

3. Turn My Way
4. Vicious Streak

In other music news, James are set to release their eleventh studio album, Pleased To Meet You, on July 2. The first single off the new album, Getting Away With It (All Messed Up), will be out on June 25, the same day they are also to release Strange Dancing: The Early Years, a compilation of songs they recorded for Sire and Factory in the mid-to-late 80s.

And finally, Echobelly are back! They have a new album out, People Are Expensive, and their own record label, Fry Up. Their decision to part with Sony and establish their own label was the result of them not wanting "to go in the direction they were pushing us - very pop oriented - and we wanted to do something that was more true to ourselves."
