The World of Readers' World
by Madison Knight

The face of publishing is changing and Readers' World is a testament to that. Since the popularity of online publishing, writer's have gotten a small taste of power by selling their own articles and novels themselves. Many writers have left the world of online publishing however, to strike out on their own by self promoting their own material and Readers' World helping those writers get the ball rolling.

The World of Readers' World
by Madison Knight

Readers' World is an international magazine for readers and writers. It has been established for over four years and works from writers all over whom have appeared inside its pages.

June Thom-Allan, publisher of Readers' World, has a background in aviation but she turned to publishing and also set about creating Indian Ocean Books. In turn, she has won many awards such as the Joondalup City Business Person of the Year Award,/i>.

Below, find the inside scoop to her rise into the world of publishing.

MK: What did winning the Joondalup City Business Person of the Year Award in 1999 mean to you?

JTA: Winning the award gave me recognition as a person, not just a female, in business and in turn Readers' World became more credible.

MK: What influences led you to become a publisher?

JTA: Honestly, I wasn't influenced at all. The publication landed in my lap after a business failed at it. I'm not even a writer (I have my editor who deals with that aspect). My background is in aviation.

MK: What's the driving force behind your success?

JTA: I am very determined at whatever I decide to do. I am passionate not only about business, but life in general and I'm also enthusiastic about all of my undertakings.

MK: What major factors culminated in establishing Readers World?

JTA: Indian Ocean Books was born resulting in more writers actually seeing their novels in print and having the opportunity of controlling the destiny of their work through their own marketing.

MK: What is the philosophy behind this magazine and what should readers expect?

JTA: Readers' World has always been targeted at readers but the writers are actually our target market. I am looking at ways to find out what writers really want in Readers' World, apart for featuring short stories etc. and I am hearing that more competitions are high on the list. This will be our latest initiative and we are re-vamping our website and Readers' World magazine.

MK: What do you expect of authors who write in?

JTA: Their work to be of a standard that we should be able to place it straight into our magazine without editing.

MK: What do you see in the future for Readers' World?

JTA: Again, honestly, Readers' World needs the support of writers and if we give these writers what they want we will be around for the long haul, both nationally and internationally.

MK: Describe a typical working day at Readers' World?

JTA: It can be chaotic from opening the mail, logging and sorting out what goes to our editor, responding to letters, paying authors, selecting stories to be inserted, typesetting Readers' World, finding relevant pics, clipart to place, keeping database up-to-date, going to the printer for a proof before going to print, collecting the magazine, sorting magazines into States, bagging, and posting.

It seems that Readers' World is a promising new venture by June Thom-Allan. A venture that allows for publication success to be in the hands of the writer and not just the publishing house. Which is something that devoted writers all over the world have always wanted, full control of their creation. It is apparent that Indian Ocean Books was created for this soul purpose. Bravo!
