Hello. I'm Bob Ballard, director for the Center for Marine Exploration at Woods Hole. In 1979, we discovered the black smokers you saw on this week's episode in 9,000 feet of water. The water is hot enough to melt lead and contains toxic gas which support exotic bacteria, bacteria scientists are trying to use to process the pollution we create.
