Sunshine Coast, BC

Powell River

Crossing Jervis Inlet by ferry (50 min. trip), we arrive in bustling Powell River, the largest city on the Sunshine Coast. There is plenty to do and the catered kayak excursions catch our eye. I would also like to hike the newly completed Sunshine Coast Trail but the weather bureau calls for rain and we didn’t bring our galoshes. Nearby Savary Island seems a good option, with long stretches of sandy beach and the warmest ocean waters in the Pacific Northwest (22 degrees Celsius).

We finally decide on an interpretive tour of the area’s Native artifacts and history offered by Ayjoomixw Tours. The First Nations’ people are an active and respected group in the region. Long before European explorers, and later logging tycoons, the Sliammon people sustained large communities on the area’s plentiful fish, wildlife and vegetation. Our tour winds to a close with a traditional Coast Salish salmon BBQ prepared by band Elders. As we enjoy the Nun-Kum Dancers moving to the beat of the drums and singing of the peoples, we know this incredible adventure won’t soon be forgotten.

The next day roars in with dazzling sunshine and Tim suggests spending the entire week exploring the Sunshine Coast. The idea is tempting but I’m anxious to continue our journey so we hop a BC ferry to cross over to Vancouver Island.
