Top Seven Supposedly-For-Kids Fantasy Movies
(Though Not Necessarily in Any Order of Preference)

  1. The Princess Bride
Flawless. Peter Falk, Cary Elwes, Robin Wright, Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, Andre the Giant--how can you go wrong? Witty, fun, and pretty.

  2. The Neverending Story
I know, I know, it was a box-office flop. But it's a great movie. Really. Boy gets transported by a magic book to a faraway adventure. Doncha wish every now and then that you had a luck dragon?

  3. Legend
A very young Tom Cruise in very little clothing. Okay, so I don't think he's all that cute, but I figured that would suck someone in! This movie also co-stars Mia Sara of Ferris Bueller’s Day Off fame. And a very scary bad guy with horns. Hmmm, maybe I'd better see this one again.

  4. Willow
A very young Val Kilmer in a bit more clothing. Great special effects for the time, and the one you find really cute is Willow, not Val. The brownies also provide comic relief.

  5. The Dark Crystal
Jim Henson's fantasy puppet world comes alive. You hardly even notice that there are no living people in the film. This one brings up some really interesting thoughts about the existence of good without evil.

  6. Labyrinth
David Bowie as the Goblin King Who Sings. This one combines Henson's puppets with people flawlessly as Jennifer Connelly tries to get her brother back.

  7. The Wizard of Oz
More singing. Even though I read the book first, I still love the movie. But didn't it make you wonder about grownups and their motives when you were a kid?

Honorable mention: Time Bandits
I'm not sure it's suitable for kids is all, but my parents definitely had me watching it.

The jury is still out on Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, only because it is still new and I always hesitate to put wet-behind-the-ears stuff on "best ever" lists. But in my opinion, it was pretty great!
