PLANET WAVES for January 20, 2000
by Eric Francis

ARIES (March 21-April 19)
Dividing lines between truth and fiction, tangibles and raging fantasies, now dissolve to into one strange reality where any possibility is real, and any probability can seem impossible. Dark and light, foul and fair: it's all up for grabs now. Judgements suspend themselves, and it has, in reality, been necessary to completely erase one vast aspect of how you relate to your world in order to make this possible. No prior shapes or forms of your personality, staunch as they were, can withstand this influx of energy, and in the chaos of it all, it seems you'll finally dare to put forth your original gutsy child self as your leading edge in life. You may never understand quite how you were hung up on the rocks of the fear of desire itself, but you can kiss its ass good-bye.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
Ideas about ownership of other people when it comes to love and sex may have never been more repugnant to you than they are today. The paces you've run over the past month, which were really the home stretch in a long marathon of trials and tests in the most personal areas of your life, have branded a crucial lesson into your cerebral cortex: freedom and happiness might as well be the same word. Without one, the other is a bald lie. And for you, who have quite a reputation for holding on not just to love, but to anger, grokking this bit of galactic wisdom promises to turn you loose in a world that's barely ready for what you have to offer; but barely is ready just enough.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)
It is clear that in relationships, we must endure losses, but the losses cannot last forever, and neither are they meaningless. Our culture puts down people who tend toward less stable bondings, while at the same time the rules of life seem to force people into situations they really have no desire to stay in, glazing it as an aura of perfection. It's a horrendous contradiction, you can see it plainly, and you know it's not your cup of tea. There are, at this juncture of your life, no such definitions you fit, particularly if you fit them at an earlier time in your development. But now you have the challenge of making your own definitions, setting your own ideas into motion, and finally setting the terms on which you relate to others.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)
Around issues of money and security in recent years, it's clear you've been walking a tight balance between a universe constructed of fear and one created of love. This is, of course, far better than trembling in expectation of disaster with no idea that anything else is possible. You know you have a choice, but the means to exercise that choice often seem elusive, and it has been very easy to fall back into your old ways of negative expectation. I seem to remember saying this to you before: In working out this issue, you must think in no terms other than your actual value in the world. If that's where your weakness lies, then you know exactly where to do your work. But if you have no question about your value, then simply set your price.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
With this week's lunar eclipse in your birth sign, you have a rare opportunity to see into the hidden places in your life, the unexplored and forgotten regions of your soul, and to make peace with the deepest security needs that you're so rarely able or willing to articulate, even to yourself. It is a truly awesome opportunity to gain significant insight into your psyche, and to bear witness to the nature and cause of your existence on the planet. I know these are things that people in contemplative lives say take decades to get small glimpses of. But the catch is this: What occurs, and the manner in which it occurs, promise to be exceptionally subtle. You will need to look, listen and feel. And remember.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sep. 22)
Please don't make the mistake of trying to maintain control of your thoughts, your mental environment or your work in the coming days. It is to the point where the circumstances of your life and your astrology stand far beyond comprehension. And though so much may seem to be slipping away, it is essential that you endure this particular stretch of time without applying force, pressure or any kinds of radical measures. You cannot quite make out the big picture enough to set the direction of your affairs yourself, and though you may be deeply reluctant to believe it, there is a plan in operation that will, when it works out, will astonish you with its wisdom, foresight and benevolence.

LIBRA (Sep. 23-Oct. 22)
I cannot begin to imagine what bizarre circumstances you are untangling in your romantic life. Why, for example, does it turn out that every love affair turns into some kind of clandestine mission, or that when the true facts of people's lives surface, they have nothing to do with what you thought was real? Why must you put out 90 units of energy into a relationship for every ten you get back? You may have already considered the history of this particular issue, but do it again. Be brutally honest. Consider every person you've ever been involved with, and all the circumstances, especially how, where and when you met. Do it in writing, dates included, taking your time. Then mediate on it. You will see the pattern, and, in its own demented way, it will make perfect sense.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 22)
If you struggle to resolve what you think is the primary issue in your life, you'll distract yourself from the real matter at hand to the point of near-total frustration. It feels like you can't quite blast out the energy you used, as if there is some kind of lock or governing device on your engines. Really, you are slowing yourself down to create an opportunity to figure out where your psychic blood is pouring out into the cosmos. You will find the hemorrhage around matters of your family and their peculiar emotional habits. You knew this; and though events of recent years had obscured this fact, you are headed for a moment of vivid clarity which may tell you that while their sickness cannot really be resolved, you are finally free to move onward, and upward.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21)
Current events of your life are having the unsettling effect of pulling the rug out from under you. If you wonder why these things are happening, it's because you need to get under that rug and find out what is there, and, incidentally, learn that you didn't need whatever was so precariously stacked on top of it. Having accepted or at least investigated these facts, the real question becomes where all this change is leading. Movement is an opportunity to get somewhere. Unexpected movement means we need to get somewhere at a time we may not have been planning to go. But it is a necessity nonetheless. So, why not make it an adventure?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You have spent much of the past two years trying to make the pieces of your life fit. Again and again, you take apart the structure and put it back together; examine your ideas and make creative changes; consider your attitude and values,  and make adjustments. And in many ways it has seemed to be a pointless activity, because when you reassemble these elements into what you hope will be one whole reality, it has fallen short of your concept for a total life. You will need to have continued patience, and to extend efforts on these same projects. But I'll be very surprised if the next three months of tinkering and questioning do not yield many of the results and answers you are seeking.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19-Feb. 18)
It's amazing what we can do without. For all the emphasis on the concept of need in our culture, it works out that we can normally survive without just about anything, and often, adapt to missing things without even noticing their absence. But missing people are another story, and though we tend to put such heartaches out of our minds however possible, the loss of love and friendship are deepest griefs we must endure here during our brief visits to this realm. I suggest that one such loss is about to reverse itself as mysteriously as it occurred in the first place. Though you may need to take the initiative, the original source of injury has lost its power to hurt you or separate you any longer, and the door is open to renewed love.

PISCES (Feb. 19-Mar. 20)
The issue of "the past" is one of the most challenging in a life dedicated to awakening. Here in the web of time, we know the past "is over," yet we live with its innumerable effects, spending much of our time rectifying them. Consider that these influences are often like invisible threads of energy leading generations back, relating to the past lovers of our past lovers, or to the broken ideas of our parents' school teachers that found our ways into our minds. Most of your recent difficulties seem to have hidden causes, yet have significant consequences. This week's extraordinary astrology promises -- at the very least -- to offer insight and understanding around many strange questions. Use these offerings well, and you'll go a long way toward improving your lot in life.

For the Faithful
Thursday's magnificent total eclipse of the moon is visible throughout the Americas starting at about 9:30 p.m. EST in skies toward the east the further west you go. Much more information is at the Sky and Telescope Sky Reporter. Check it out if you can, and bring the kids. The moon is that large bright object in the sky with a crazy pattern scribbled into it. Eclipses are astrological events with crazy patterns scribbled into them, and this one happens concurrently with a breathtaking conjunction between the Sun, Neptune and Mercury on one end, and the Moon and wise old Pallas Athene at the other, with lots of fun stuff in between. Though the skies are peaceful, confusion and errors of judgement are possible under such wildly mystical aspects. Take it easy. Drive like a human being. Stay out of arguments. Use the time creatively. You can work some wonders in your life in this bizarre and brilliant moment.++
