1. Please tell the readers about the band. When it was formed, the line-up, releases and stuff like that.
INHUMATE was born in the end of 1990. In that time there was Olivier on vocals, Stephane on drums, David on guitars and me on bass. We had several line up changes and the last and definitive one is up since 1994. David and me are still playing, in that time arrived Christophe (vocals) and Yannick (drums). Before that we just recorded our 1st demo ?Abstract Suffering? (1993 4 tracks). Under the last line up we did 1 demo and 3 albums. The demo is ?Grind Your Soul? (1995 7 tracks) and the albums are ?Internal Life? (1996 18 tracks), ?Ex-Pulsion? (1997 13 + 1 tracks) and ?Growth? (2000 17 tracks) in the same time we did about 10 split tapes with bands like TEAM (Holland), FUNERAL MARCH (Slovenia), EXHUMATOR (Belgium), MAGGOT SHOES (Germany), DISEMBOWEL (Greece) and also appear on several dozens of tape or CD compilations from all around the world.
2. How would you describe your music? What are your musical influences?
We call our music ?grind death?. Nothing more. Why ? Just because we all come from death metal, we all began to listen to this music when it arrived on the market with bands like HELLHAMMER, ONSLAUGHT, VENOM... and then we followed the trends and when we started to play the music we were doing was getting more and more brutal, with many grind core parts . In the bio we were sending a few years ago, it was written that we were influenced by CANNIBAL CORPSE & NAPALM DEATH. That was not wrong, but I think that today INHUMATE found it?s own way to grind death metal !
3. What inspires you lyrically? What topics do the lyrics deal with?
We have different topics with our lyrics. But usually we don?t have gore lyrics and pure death metal lyrics. We try to have a kind of philosophical thoughts, trying to understand what we are, what we do, where we go to... You know all usual metaphysical questions. But we also have many tracks talking of music : like ?Grind to the core?, ?Underground?, etc... Those tracks are very important because it shows that we try to understand this will to kill through noise, we don?t just act because we need that, because our urges ask us to play that and nothing else !!!
4. What is the main purpose of your music? Any political/religious message?
We don?t carry any political or religious message... The only thing we wanna say through our music is : ?have some fucking fun !?. I think that if people need musicians to know how to act in life (through political lyrics) or to know what to believe in (through religious lyrics) then those people might have a very small soul... And on the other side, we are not here to tell to people how they have to act or think we think that everybody is free with his own conscience and mind. We are just here to have some fun with our music and we try to communicate that fucking good feeling we have. We play music for pleasure and hope people enjoy it, nothing else because we are musicians...
5. What about live shows? Have you played any gigs lately? How often do you play live?
We play as often we can. It means that we played around 65 concerts in the last 10 years. During those concerts we played with bands like CANNIBAL CORPSE, NILE, VADER, AGATHOCLES, MALIGNANT TUMOUR, CRYPTOPSY, SIX FEET UNDER, IMMOLATION and many many underground bands like ABORTED, PANDEMIA, SANITY?S DAWN, SKALL, APOPLEXY, BLOODY SIGN, FLESHLESS, MASTIC SCUM, PUNISHMENT, YATTERING, etc... Next concert will be Friday the 25th of May at the FUCK THE COMMERCE Festival. The headliner will be CRYPTOPSY, EHUMED, REGURGITATE, DEFLESHED, SKINLESS. There will be 30 brutal bands in 3 days, maybe the most important brutal underground metal festival in Europe I think !
6. How is the metal scene in your area? Are you in contact with other bands?
In our area the metal scene is fucking small so we know all the bands, the contact goes very well with all those bands, just one problem they all want help from us but not many of them really tries to promote itself... I can name you those bands : APOPLEXY, IGNIS FATUUS, POST MORTEM, ARCHAEUS, ORGAN HARVEST, CEREBRAL COMMOTION. And I think that?s all... When I say ?our area? I mean a 300 kilometers circle away from here !!! So, you see the metal scene is not very powerful in this side of France. But I think it?s almost the same everywhere in France. We are not a metal country I think, that?s why we are lucky to live not too far from the German and Belgium borders !!! So we can play out of our borders !
7. Is anybody in your band involved in other projects? If yes, who and which?
No, nobody in INHUMATE is involved in other project because INHUMATE needs too much time to all of us. We are all doing some things for the band besides of music. Yannick is running the GRIND YOUR SOUL Distro (after David and Christophe... They left it because it was too much work), Christophe is doing a bit mail, David is our webmaster and I?m doing most of the promotion shits, interviews, searching for concerts, etc... So, no one of us has time enough to do something else, but it?s not taboo and everyone is free to do it of course; I say that because I already heard in some bands that the guys were not playing in another band because a ?leader? was asking for it... Stupid fascist attitude...
8. What is the best CD / demo you have heard in the last month?
It?s the BLASTER PAIN demo. BLASTER PAIN is a brutal death metal band from Brazil. Everybody can contact them (Fabio) at : blasterpain@hotmail.com
9. What was the last concert you went to? What was the best concert you have been at?
The last concert I went at was our last concert. We played (not good that time...) with French bands POST MORTEM and RIGOR MORTYS and the headliner was the polish brutal death metal band YATTERING. It was a good gig, but I think maybe a bit expensive that'? why not that much people came (around 60/70). The best concert I have ever seen was CANNIBAL CORPSE in 1991. It was the first time I was seeing such a brutal band and was totally amazed man !!!! They almost killed me !!! Incredible show !!!
10. What kind of beverage is your favorite? Any special brands? Do you do any drugs?
As our guitarist is working in a beer brewery, I drink almost only beer ! It?s free for us at our rehearsals and so everything?s ok ! Out of that I?m absolutely not in strong alcools, it?s too hard for my small stomach (he, he). About drugs, it?s more than 10 years that I didn?t smoke a fucking joint (I live that for hippies...) and I stopped tobacco one year and half ago. I stopped it for several reasons and one is that I was really tired after gigs (because of the physical effort), now things are a bit better and that?s ok ! INHUMATE should be a stage band !
11. What can really piss you off?
Around music... Not many things, but there?s one thing I do fucking hate, it?s people into metal that act like rock stars !!!! I know several bands like that. I find this attitude stupid and absolutely shitty. But I?m not here to tell to people how they have to act....
12. What are you plans for the future? Gigs, releases and so on.
About our next releases, I have to explain our concept... So, be ready for a fucking long explanation man !! We try to do a whole concept with all our CDs. This concept will be made with 7 albums so we call it an heptalogy. Those 7 albums will be 7 steps of a human life and will try to show that life never ends, so if life never ends then there is no time left and we arrive at what we call the Abolition of Time. Some people gonna tell me that life ends when a guy dies, and to this I answer that in the normal way of life all person should give birth to a child, in that case life goes on through the child, ok ? So when the parents gonna die, life won?t end because the child will carry it. And when that child will die (in a normal age I mean) it should have been the same, that child, when he?ll be an adult, he should have given life to his own child? So, when the try to understand what life is for the all humanity, you can?t understand when it begins and when it will end, can you ? And time cannot be counted into a so wide moment, is there then a real time ? Can?t it be abolished ? I think that yes, because he human brain isn?t strong enough to understand all those things. So, that was for the whole concept. And we try to put this, to explain this through our cover artworks (and a little bit through the lyrics). So, back in the past, our first CD ?Internal Life? (1996) was dealing with the life before life, the life inside the mother. The second one, ?Ex-Pulsion? (1997), which means the moment of birth in French, is about that time. When you got the whole complete CD, you can see the pictures of that moment, maybe the biggest traumatism that all human people has to feel in it?s life. The third CD ?Growth? deals with all the young years, the teen ages years, then there will be ?Maturity? (that name might be changed), ?The Fifth Season?, ?Death? and ?Eternal Life?. With this last CD, we close the concept and in the same way that the name sounds like the first CD, the story begins again, and never ends as long as there will be human people on Earth. Now the only thing we hope is to be able to finish this long concept, 4 CD left to do...It won?t be easy... About the next gigs, I already told you about the FTC IV, we also have several gigs planned in July, September and October !!!
