Actresses

A self-indulgent look at some of my favourites.

The choices are arbitrary, and mine - but these are the women I'd go out of my way to
see in movies.  Some, I chose because I like one role they have done; some because I have
liked many roles they have done; some because I admire their talent and like the
movies they appear in.  I have tried not to include actresses whom I just find attractive - but that's a difficult thing to do!  If you want to see the women I love for their beauty, go to my page on Beautiful Women.

It'll be easy to see the types I like: dark Englishmen with large noses.  Why they
should be more talented in general than other men is one of the mysteries of
the universe.

Ingrid Bergman
I loved her in Casablanca.  I was spellbound by her in Spellbound.

Juliette Binoche

I saw her first in The English Patient. I was impressed.
Saw her also in
Horseman on the Roof,
where she rode well.

Denise Black

Denise Black has worked mostly in British TV, and as far as I know, has not been sen much in Canada.  I first noticed her - and liked her - as Mme Guillotine (Gabrielle Damiens) in Part 2 of The Scarlet Pimpernel, starring Richard E. Grant and Martin Shaw.

Next I saw and loved her in Queer as Folk, where she played Vince's wonderful mother.

Clever, funny, versitile.

I particularly enjoyed her as
Guinan in Star Trek: The Next Generation, but felt the role was left with potential unfulfilled.

Whoopie Goldberg

Katharine Hepburn

The incomparable!

Linda Hunt

I first saw her in The Year of Living
dangerously, where I was totally convinced
by her performance.

Since then, I've been impressed every time
I've seen her, but her best role - ?  The
short-lived but wonderful science fiction TV
show, Space Rangers, where she played
Commander Chennault.

I

Sophie Marceau

I saw her first in Marquise.  Then A Midsummer Night's Dream, Braveheart and Tomorrow Never Dies.

Maybe my admiration for he is because of the good costume roles - rare in movies these days.

Mary Elizabeth
Mastrontonio

Michelle Pfeiffer
I would have said I wasn't much of a Michelle Pheiffer fan - that I wasn't terribly impressed with either her looks or her talent.

But she's been in  many of my favourite movies - more, perhaps, than any other actress: The Russia House, Dangerous Liaisons, A Midsummer Night's Dream - and I liked her as the Catwoman in Batman.  So I put her in this list, with some reluctance, but also now with considerable respect.

Emma Thompson

Elegance
and
style.

Nana Visitor
I liked her style as Kira.  Brave, feisty, witty - strong but never strident.

Then Nana Visitor played Intendant Kira too, and really got to have fun with her Star Trek roles!
