Land of Blood and Honey

*** another one of my "church" poems; the line of thought was inspired by some books i had been reading on religious history and feminist theology ***

like a lot of things in this system,
we lose by default

for years we have heard
thou shalt not lust
kill
steal
lie
covet

it is no longer good enough

why should we not kill
when we are killed for a word,
at a word,
when we are not people in your eyes?

you call our sacred love "lust"
and declare it a sin
i think that you are jealous
that you cannot feel such things,
but only the power/dominance/frenzy of rape

you tell us not to covet
and to be content with out lots
yet you leave us with nothing to live on

our money is yours
our property is yours
our children are yours
even our bodies
are yours
(by your laws, anyways)

but our souls are not yours.

our souls will never be yours.

though you killed our families,
our souls are not yours.

though you destroyed our cities,
our hearts are unconquered.

though you defiled our Goddess,
(and even killed her, in myth)
still we remember
and believe.

though you may beat us,
rape us
kill us
take our children
still our souls are held free.

they are our own.

and you will pay, when the balance comes out
for when you take away everything,
we have nothing to lose

and nothing to hold us back.
