The Secret Circle: Rebirth
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
It was dark when Callie’s plane landed in the Massachusetts’
airport. She stood in the receiving area, not sure who she was looking for. She had never met her grandmother, her father’s mother, since he left New Salem as a teenager. He had said she would have to
return there eventually. But he never told her why.
He had died, only two weeks ago. The funeral was held quickly, quietly, to curb reporters from prying into his death. He wasn’t famous or wealthy, only infamous. He ran a small business of private detectives. But they weren’t like other investigators, they relied on pendulums and crystals to track down wanted men and women.
Callie had taken only a couple things from home, besides her clothing. Her teddy bear that was a birthday gift when she turned five, a dragon sculpture her mother gave her father which held a metallic-black orb in its claws, and a large heavy leather-bound book secured with a large lock. She didn’t know what was in the book, but it had been hidden on the back of her dad’s book shelf.
“Calliope?” a frail voice called. “Callie Conant?”
Callie turned to see a small, white haired woman leaning on a cane. “I’m your grandmother, Cassie Conant.” The woman hobbled over to her. “My you look like your father! Kieran must be so proud of you!”
The teenager was bewildered. She held her tote bag uncertainly, not
sure about this babbling old woman.
“It’s too bad Adam isn’t alive, he would have loved to meet you!”
Cassie continued. “Of course, he’s around.” She winked
conspiratorially at Callie who gave her a puzzled expression.
“Your father never told you about….” She paused, looking for the
right words. “Family?”
“Not much. Just that I would have to return here eventually.” She
fidgeted with her hair, a tangle of red, gold and silver strands
twined together like bloodied sunlight.
Cornflower blue eyes searched Callie’s face. “Come, come. Let’s go
to Crowhaven Road. There are so many people waiting to meet you!”
