^_^ Dedicated to my soulmate - wherever he is ^_^
Part One - The princess herself
Beech Redfern sat by the warm fire, watching Kimber sleep. Kimber Goddard was his everything, his soulmate, his forbidden love. On the run from the night world, they were rebels some would say. All they wanted was peace, peace for themselves and their beloved daughter Jezebel. Beech kissed Kimber's cheek gently and pawed through her long firey locks, his gestures flamed with passion. She was strong, a quality many humans lacked. She had the dignity in her looks, regal and innocent as she slept, like that of a medieval princess. Beech himself had ebony curls for hair, currently unbrushed from the many weary days they had spent on the road. His eyes were that of silver fire, a soft twilight colour that no human could possess. As he kissed her forehead, she awoke, sighing with relief that it was him who woke her, sighing with relief that together, they had survived another day.
"Beech?" Her voice echoing the relief she felt inside. "We made it, we're alive?" Beech paused, her beauty was too surreal, even for a vampire. He was sure her looks surpassed that of Maya herself.
"Yes Kim. But dawn approaches and the search will not rest. It is time to leave."
"But surely we have a few moments to spare." She sat up gracefully, yet dizzily from the lack of sleep. Beech glided to her side steadying her.
"A few indeed. How does my princess wish to spend them?"
"I can think of a few ways." She grinned mischievously. Beech stepped closer, pushing against her. Then he stepped back uncomfortably.
"But what of Jezebel?" Kimber considered for a moment, eyes darkening, no doubt worrying of the stress the young girl was going through.
"She has travelled far. Let her rest a while. At dawn we leave." Then she kissed him. So innocent, so chased. The world fell away.
They left later than dawn and Jezebel was thankful for this small break. The child left quickly when the time did come to go though. Her mother had explained the importance of escaping the bad people. Her father or 'daddy' as she would usually call him was discussing their next destination. Jezebel fell slightly behind talking to Jessica.
"Daddy sayz we move too far way. I will be princwess lik he tell mama an me." Jessica nodded in agreement. "Evwey thing will be oka doka now wen we get to daddys bwruder." Jessica offered a shrug in reply. Jez didn't mind. Jessica was often shy. Jez allowed herself to daydream, yes, everything would be fine.
Kimber looked over her shoulder for the third time. "Jezebel honey, keep up. Not far to go now, sweetheart." Beech glanced over at Kimber. A tiny voice replied.
"Don cal me Jezebel!" Beech smiled bleakly.
"Kim darling, she'll be alright. She's only a few paces back."
"Yes, but I still worry. Is it normal?"
"Lots of children have invisible friends. Jez has never stayed anywhere long enough to make real friends. That'll change soon." Kimbers eyes moistened.
"How the hell are we supposed to tell her?"
"We'll find a way. She'll be upset, but she'll understand as she gets older." A pattering of feet started up behind them. Jez ran up to them giggling and took each of their hands. She pulled them forwards.
"We here, we here." And Jez was right. From the great hill where they stood, Beech could see the town. The silver cord thrummed, and with his daughter pulling at his hand, he knew everything would be alright.
Part Two - Remember when we met?
They stayed the night at a cheap motel. Their room was dirty and Jez announced regularly that it smelt of old socks. Beech was out, checking the town for nightworlders and hunting while he was at it. When he was back, she and Jez would travel to his brothers house. Bracken Redfern still knew not of Kimber and Beeches relationship. Kimber frowned and they still had to tell Jezebel….
"Mummy, mummy. Me fly to moon as I haf a roket thingy. Jessica come too!" Kimber smiled. Her daughter and 'Jessica' were playing with an old box. It was their rocket. Perhaps telling Jez would work out. It would be healthier for Jez, and perhaps 'Jessica' would make less of an appearance in her life. She was young, but still….invisible friends are not normal…at least Kimber thought so.
"I'm back princess." Beech shut the door behind him.
"Which princess?" Kimber demanded playfully. Jez joined in with this.
"Yeah, wich pwincess?" She pouted angrily.
"Why my darling princess Jezebel, of course!" Kimber watched, giggling as her knight in shining armour lifted up Jez and spun her round, as if she was weightless. Jez laughed gleefully.
"Nevr cal me JEZEBEL!" Beech started to tease.
"And why now, my lovely Jezebel." Jez growled and kicked her daddy as hard as she could. Then started laughing once more as Beech started to hop round the small room, as if his foot had broken. Kimber sighed.
"Beech, silly. It's time. We have to go now Jez." Kimber picked up her bag, it was small, but you must always travel light when you're on the run. "We can shower when we get to Brackens." Jez cheered.
"I wanna wash!" Jez hopped around and went to get her 'Sesame Street' bag" Beech whispered in Kimbers ear…
"First time I've heard her say that, or any other kid for that matter!" Kimber smiled and Beech kissed her lightly on the cheek. She remembered when they first met…
It had been a cold, wintry day in New Orleans, she had wandered into the local black iris, the werewolf on guard had been dimmer than most of them, and let her in. Beech had taken her out to kill, but ended up with a new soulmate. She remembered tiny details of it. The way he smelt, the song the club was playing, how warm the room felt as opposed to the bitter frost outside. The way he held her, looked into her eyes. His voice when he told her he loved her. His unearthly beauty.
That was the night their love had started. That was the night their lives became doomed.
Part Three - Meeting Morgy
Brackens house was old and crumbling, almost as old as Bracken himself. Age didn't show on Bracken Redfern himself though, it rarely did on vampires. Beech rang the doorbell and waited. Just as they were about to leave the door opened a bit.
"What's your business?" Beech couldn't believe his ears. It had been one hundred years since he had seen this person.
"Brack, is that you?" The door creaked and opened widely.
"Beechy boy?" Beech nodded. They started to sock each other on the arm.
"Woah, it's been a hell'uver long time since I last laid eyes on my brother!"
"Yeah, a hundred years, give or take." Beech laughed, and Bracken joined in, booming heartily. That was until he saw Jez and Kimber. He recognised the stench of humanity.
"I think I have some explaining to do." Bracken frowned.
"I think you do."
Jez was outside, her father had told her to wait here. Her mother had emphasised it with a BE CAREFUL after her dads every word. She walked back and forth on the crumbling wall outside her uncles house. Eventually she sat down, bored with waiting. Soon a young boy came to rest beside her. Jez looked him over, a small boy, with unkempt long hair and a serious expression. Jez did something she had never done before. She darted forward and kissed the boy, then fell back. The boy jumped up.
"Euww! Cooties. Yuk, yuk, yuk!" Jez stood proud.
"I'm Jez an I no haf cooties!" The boy stopped.
"Okayee then I am Morgread an I no like kissies."
"Kay, Morgy. Stressssssssssssed." Jez watched 'Morgy' start to get angry. She began to think she'd made a mistake. She tried to cheer him up.
"You know, cream is good."
"Wot?" Morgread looked puzzled.
"Ice cream is good. Lets go." Jez pulled Morgread away and they went across the road to try the human thing called ice cream.
"……I DON'T BLOODY WELL CARE!" Bracken shouted, his face red and his voice booming.
"Brack, I really need this."
"You're lucky you're my bastard brother or I'd phone the council right this minute!"
"But…."
"Get out my house, and take that fuckin' vermin with you!" Beech started to get mad.
"She is NOT a vermin. She is a woman, why can't you see that? I have given up everything to be with her. EVERYTHING." Bracken started to protest again but was interrupted by Kimber, who in contrast to the shouting, spoke softly.
"Please sir, we didn't ask for this, and if we had a choice, perhaps we would wish for this to happen differently, but this is how it happened and there's nothing we or anyone else can do about it. Your brother has come to you I a time of great need. If you won't help us we'll go but please, try to look past all the lies and propaganda the council has told you. If this isn't meant to happen between humans and night people, whatever is out there would not allow this. Please?" Bracken sighed and shook his head. The room was finally silent. It was an effect only Kimber could have, Beech thought proudly. Braken lifted his head and spoke.
"Well, out of vermin you certainly made the right choice. Are you sure she's not a witch? She speaks wisely." When Beech shook his head Bracken spoke again, this time in a more harsh tone. "There's a guestroom upstairs. You and my niece Jezebel take that room, and YOU…" he nodded at Beech. "…YOU can take the couch, and be bloody thankful for it." Beech acknowledged this with a nod and a sparkle in his eye. Bracken nodded back and spoke "Be safe." Kimber took that as a sign to go outside for Jez and leave the brothers to reminisce.
Part Four - Telling Jezebel
That night, when Jez, Bracken and his wife Maude were asleep, Kimber snuck downstairs. Beech slept, looking so innocent that his tough exterior was becoming a stranger in her mind. She held onto his hand gently yet, firmly and he started to stir. He focused straight away, vampire that he was.
"My lady…?" Kimber smiled.
"The princess requires your services." He smiled, then his face filled with fake confusion.
"But…what service might I give my lady at this hour?" Kimber got up.
"Oh…well I'm sorry sir, now I think of it…there is none."
"None at all??" Kimber turned, eyes questioning.
"Well, maybe one" She sighed and fell against him. He smiled.
"Well…anything to please my lady." He kissed her, the pink haze surrounded them. For the last time in this lifetime, Kimber and Beech made love.
Jez woke early to conversation in the room below her. She pulled on an oversized dressing gown that Maude had left by the door for her. It smelt of old lady, a mix of cat, peppermint, and a mystery ingredient, possibly sweaty gym socks. She hurried down the stairs with boundless energy. Then she heard what the voices were saying…
"Thankyou…it means so much to us." Jez's mommy was talking. "We'll break it to her later. We leave tommorrow." Beech sighed.
"We'll come back when the hunt is over." He turned to Kimber. "It's for the best honey." She nodded, tears dripping down her face, tickling her nose.
"I know…but well, oh I don't know." Maude, the witch, had her arm around Kimber. A feeble attempt at comfort.
"Kim, can I call ya Kim? Jez will be happy here. She can have a normal life. Make friends, go to school. Do you want to stop her from having a normal life?" Jez saw mummy was sobbing uncontrollably.
"I never said I'd stop her. It was part my idea…it's just, I'll miss her…" She broke down sobbing. The pain travelled down the silver cord undiluted. Bracken spoke bluntly.
"So it's sorted. You and Beech leave tomorrow. Jezebel shall stay with us." Jez took this moment to show herself.
"You're..leave…me?" Kimber stood, wiping her face.
"Oh, honey." The little child ran out the out the door, not knowing what lied ahead.
Part Five - Boo Fir
Jezebel was recovering from the fact that her parents didn't love her. They were gonna leave her?? She ran as fast as she could, meeting Morgy a block ahead.
"Jezzy?"
"Don't call me that!"
"Jez, you okayee?"
"No…mi mommy and daddy hat me!"
"Oh…sorry. My momma out all time and Morgy all 'lone." Jez could feel a silvery vibration in the air.
"I...gotta be 'lone now Morgy. See ya!" Morgread waved.
"I 'stand. Same for meee at furst." Jez saw her parents catching up. She ran faster still and bumped into a tall man, taller than her dad. He had dark skin and a look of authority. Her mamma screamed.
Beech stood with his soulmate watching the tall vampire grab his daughter and pull out a gun. He beckoned them over.
"Azarius is my name, as I understand from my contacts on the council, someone has been very, very bad." He motioned with the gun. "I'll shoot the brats brains out and think nothing of it. If we co-operate though…I may spare her. Follow me…and don't even think about trying something." They all walked across the street into an old run down house, it looked similar to Brackens. Inside the house there was several other vampires. Azariurs spoke again.
"You have been charged and found guilty of treason against the night world council. You are all traitors. Your punishment shall be death, execution for treachery. Do you have anything to say?"
Beech was never prouder when Kimber stood up to the vampires, nor was he ever sadder. The fight had gone out of her. She had given in. Jezebel cowered in the corner.
"Do it quickly" she whispered. "I won't fight you," her hair of flame cascaded behind her. She looked wild and free, like an amazon priestess or maybe a virgin sacrifice. "Kill me, but let my daughter live."
Beech was weeping, entangled in a desperate struggle with three other vampires. Azarius had the gun. Jez watched as her mothers chest exploded with a bang. The blood dripped to the floor and Beech felt the cord weaken and fall limp. She was dead. He stared at the man who ripped his heart out. He was…laughing. Beech was mad, furious. Words were not enough to describe it. His feelings of hate were put aside for a moment when Azarius spoke again.
"Now…the child." Beech had failed Kimber. He would save Jezebel. He ran to his daughter.
"Leave her alone! It's not her fault. She doesn't have to die!" The vampires ran towards him and tried to restrain him. Azarius was shouting new orders.
"Stake him, STAKE HIM….just by the heart." He smiled cruely. Beech felt pain and dropped down. Jez emitted a scream. Her dad had been staked. Beech watched, dying slowly, emotionally and physically. Azarius grinned in satisfaction.
"Now, the child." There was a gunshot and Beech swore, tears streaming his face. There was a scream of pain from Jez and shouts of confusion. Azarius held her high.
"Well now, it seems we have a freak of nature. The bullets didn't kill her, yet she drinks no blood. She's part vampire." A chant started up between the vampires.
"Kill the freak, kill the freak!" Jez was crying. Azarius swore in the confusion.
"Get me a fucking stake, someone!" He growled. A skinny, sleazy looking guy supplied him with just that.
"Witness the death of the freak!" He plunged the stake in, but before the stake went fully in, blue fire erupted.
The bad people were all gone, apart from the one called Azarius, who Jez saw fleeing into the distance. Jez stumbled to her dad, who was leaking red. He got up painfully.
"Daddy, you kay?" Beech winced. He couldn't die yet, more vampires would be on their way.
"Okay…princess…ahh….lets go. We have to …ah...go." Jez's chin wobbled.
"Wot 'bout mamma?" Beech went up to the body of his love and kissed the cheek. He whispered into her ear.
"Goodbye my lady, heaven will be glad of your presence. Save a cloud for me, as soon I shall join thee. I have one more service to perform. I loved you." He shed a tear for his love and kissed her once again, on the lips.
"Mummys…gone to sleep. She'll catch up later." Jez protested.
"I wanna sleep too! Me tired. Wot waz boo fir." Beech sighed, scooping her up. The pain was getting worse. He would be with Kimber sooner than he expected.
"Boo fir? Oh…blue fire. I don't know. Say goodbye to your mother." Jez kissed her.
"I'll see you at tee, I luv ooh!" Beech used his remaining strength to get to Brackens.
Bracken Redfern opened the front door to see a pale faced crying child and his brothers bloody corpse.
Part Six - Forgotten once again
Maude tried to speak her husband but he had lapsed into another silence.
"Dear…?"
"He was a fool. I told him…" Brackens eyes darkened.
"I've put Jezebel to bed. I brewed a memory potion. It's best she forgets the whole thing." Bracken grunted in reply.
"She kept metioning…boo fir? What's that?"
"I dunno. Maude…can I be alone for awhile?"
"Sure" Bracken watched her leave. He had disposed of the body earlier, it's best the night world couldn't trace Jez to the house. He sighed, and shed a tear for his brother, and all the worlds other lovesick fools. He went to check on Jez closing the sitting room door behind him. As the door closed, the boo fir was forgotten once again.
The End….now don't ya get all weepy on me!!!
