Riley Finn was first came to Sunnydale as part of The Initiative, a covert government operation that fought, captured and studied demons. That was his "secret" identity - during the day Riley Finn was a normal college student and teaching assistant of Maggie Walsh. Riley met Buffy while she was buying her books in the campus bookstore and clocked him on the head with a bunch of books. Later on in the year, Buffy and Riley began dating. They didn't tell each other for awhile what each of their secret identities was. It turned out that The Initiative and The Scooby Gang, while both fighting demons, were working at cross purposes. Buffy and Riley, once their secrets were out, continued to see each other romantically. When The Initiative backfired in a major way, Riley left their ranks and joined the Scoobies. He remained in Sunnydale long after The Initiative had been disbanded. But he felt like he didn't have a purpose. While he was in The Initiative, he had been pumped full of drugs to give him super strength - they wreaked havoc on his system and surgery was required to let him survive. Riley, by this time, was head over heels in love with Buffy, but didn't feel that she was returning that love. He didn't feel as if she needed him. Irrationally, he began visiting vampire brothels (I guess that's what you'd call it) - paying vampires to suck his blood. He told a shocked Buffy when she found out that he needed to know what she had felt with Angel and Dracula. Buffy, of course, said those were completely different instances and not the same at all. Riley, who had been approached by another government/army operation (this one deep undercover in Belize with no civilian contact) then told Buffy that if she didn't give him a reason to stay, he was leaving. Buffy, still reeling from learning of his betrayal could not do so until it was too late and Riley left Sunnydale. It is presumed he is in Belize with the government operation
