Terms, Beliefs, and Expressions

The purpose of this page, mainly, is to provide more details on papillon speech/culture, and, more importantly, explain papillon-specific vocab. Don't worry about how much of it there is, you hardly need to know it all to play... actually, mostly I write about this stuff for my own amusement... so if you say "sacred place" rather than "Yoshika", that's fine... I won't attack you or get angry. Hopefully, though, this page will make this site a little easier to understand. Printer-friendly version coming soon ^_^

Expressions

[clan name] by nature, [clan name] by heart -- Papillon usually don't need to declare their clans. The difference between a Hikari and Jitsuko is obvious. Kenjin are usually closer to twoleggers, are with their mindbonded twolegger [assuming they have one], or, if you listen to a Duuyo, "stink of twoleggers". Even so, sometimes a papillon will state their clan or be asked what their clan is; this is the way they respond. The first clanname is the one they were born to, the second is the one to which they currently belong. As they are most commonly the same, the expression become contracted to "[clanname] by nature and heart".
Firesky's Blessing(s) or Forest's Blessing(s)-- A common papillon greeting. There are many variations.
kisoma -- Derogatory name for a wolf who has switched clans. Most commonly used by Hikari to describe former Jitsuko, as their additional muscle makes them easy to spot. (adaptation of twolegger speech [changed so pronouncable by papillon] by Kenjin soon after splitting of the Sakura into clan... ki="false" soma="sibling")
Little cousin-- Due to papillon forgetfulness, a term often used in place of a Sakura's name by Asahiko (usually when they forget the name).
pet -- A derogatory term used often by Duuyo to describe Kenjin, occationally used by Hikari.
(clan)sister/brother -- While 'sister' and 'brother' are used in a literal sense, they are often used to denote a wolf of the same clan. Ex: I've been looking for other papillon for so long, I'd never guess the first one I'd meet would be a sister!.

Beliefs

the Great Cycle of Being or Great Cycle -- It is a belief that all things, spiritual and physical, exist in a cycle; that things are created, exist for s purpose, are uncreated, and then remade to serve a new purpose.
Eternal Rotation -- While the Great Cycle of Being gives a name to the cycle itself, the Eternal Rotation refers to the continous movement of spiritual enegry throught the universe.
Balance -- As with a lopsided wheel, the Great Cycle struggles without Balance. While it is certain Balance must be maintained for the future of reality itself, most clan argue over what, excatly, needs to be Balanced. The word sometimes appears in papillon speech, like 'by Balance's grace'.
the Balanced -- Not to be confused with 'Balance', the Balanced are all souls that have reached their full spiritual potential. These are the ones who manage the cycle and create from raw spiritual energy.
Heart of the Cycle -- The Great Cycle is thought to have a center of pure spiritual energy that is waiting to be remade. Souls here are thought to be in bliss, so it is somewhat like the papillon heaven.
to Join the Cycle and reaching Balance -- All things that cease to exist... things that are unmade by the Great Cycle (like the dead) ... return to the the Heart of the Cycle, so to say someone or something has 'joined the Cycle' is to say they have died or been destoryed. To reach Balance is to die and become one of the Balanced.
Firesky -- While, technically, there are no deities in papillon religion, Firesky (Forest) is often reveared as one. She is the mother and the papillon and dearly loved by her children. As she is thought to have become one of the Balanced after her destruction, in dire situations, some papillon have been known to pray to her.
Startear -- The river Startear, which was also destroyed long ago, is usually seen as the male counterpart or even consort of Firesky. He is thought to be equal in status and power with Firesky and is honored as such , yet he is often not as frequently mentioned, though he , too, is a lifegiver. Few outside the papillon know of him and his importance in papillon religion. He is also thought to be Balanced.
Higan and So'gan --- Equinox celebration and Solstice celebration, respectively. As the papillon see the universe in terms of an endless cycle, equinoxes and solstices are very important events, as the cycle of the sun is idenitified with the Great Cycle itself. (more information on the Higan and So'gan will be added if it ever looks like we'd have enough wolves to make playing one interesting).
Yoshika -- A papillon sacred place. Other sentients are kept away and fighting with other papillon is forbidden. Kills may not be made in or near the Yoshika; prey animals are safe there, save on special occations.

That's all I can think of for now. Email me with suggestions for expansion.
