If a radio station that purports to be a funk radio station plays "Backfield in Motion," then since the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" is as funky as "Backfield in Motion," it too must be regarded as a funk song. And if the Archies' "Sugar Sugar" is regarded as a funk song, then there is no longer any standard of judgment for anything on earth.
"Backfield in Motion" has few redeeming qualities. It even includes the sounds of a screaming football-watching crowd. It's almost like in "Leader of the Pack," when the girls are talking to each other... "I met him at the candy store... do you get the picture--" "Yes, we see..." "That's when I fell for.... The leader of the pack [motorcycle noise] [motorcycle noise]..."
Also, "Backfield in Motion" should be called "Offsides and Holding" if the girl that the singer is singing to is cheating on him. "Backfield in Motion" sounds like a song about a big and very motile ass. Which would probably be a much better song anyway.
