Although Albert Schweitzer was not a Buddhist, he was a selfless, compassionate human being who reflected the very essense of Buddhist philosophy in every aspect of his life. In Reverence for Life, Schweitzer wrote "I cannot but have reverence for all that is called life. I cannot avoid compassion for everything that is called life. That is the beginning and foundation of morality." He wrote the following moving prayer on behalf of the animals: |
