SARAH CRACKNELL
Front woman for Saint Etienne, has a voice that makes them sound like japanese disco music. Some describe Espiritu's music as "Saint Etienne gone brunette." Sarah Craknell had a solo outing called Lipslide, which had the minimal acoustic yet haunting tune "Oh boy the feeling when you held my hand". One of the best voices ever. Listen to the new Saint Etienne tracks from the forthcoming Sound Of Water cd, at: Tokyoskyline. Included are the first two singles "How We Used To Live", and "Heartfailed". What can be said about the Icelandic wonder? The former lead singer for The Sugarcubes, shared a producer with Espiritu at one time, and did a collaboration as well. She is one of the best vocalists and song writers of our times. And pretty crazy too. She will soon be seen in the upcoming film "Dancing in the Dark", and a duet with the lead singer of radiohead is to follow on the soundtrack. Her brilliant "All Is Full Of Love" video, by Chris Cunnigham, was nominated for best video at the Grammys recently. Bjork is currently working on a new album. A "musical scientist" in every right. Ok, ok, so I know alot of you think she's pretty lame. But after the 80's, she's worked with some cool producers, learned how to write good tunes, moved to Deconstruction Recordings (which she shared with artists like Espiritu), and collaborated with some pretty cool blokes. Towa Tei, Nick Cave, the Mowax records Team, David Ball, Ben Lee, Portishead, Olive, The Manic Street Preachers, the Lightning Seeds, Saint Etienne, and others have all worked with her, not to mention various DJ's, such as Aphrohead, etc.. She's kinda become an ironic symbol of an 80's puppet popster who actually got away from all that and made some descent tunes. And she's australian to boot. The french Parisian sex kitten of the 90's, dated Lenny Kravitz (who produced her debut solo english album), and ended up marrying Jonny Depp. She has a very cool 60's sounding voice though, and her album was a good venture in doo-wop/french pop similar to Espiritu on some levels. She made pop, good pop, cool again. Her sound is like the mellow goldness of 60's/70's pop. Standout tracks include "Natural High", Sunday Mondays", and "Your love Has Got A Handle On My Mind", which is the best track on her self titled debut english album One of the most powerful vioces ever. A very strong voice. A british female vocalist with amazing vocal cords. Her album "Rid of Me" and the single "Down by the Water" as well as two grammy nominations, which count for nothing as far as I'm concerned, have gnared her commercial recognition. Her latest album, and her best by far, has gotten little airplay. Like bjork, she as well is a strong song writer, and doesn't fit into any one mold. Both PJ Harvey and Espiritu have worked with Bjork and some of the same producers.
