ODE TO TITANIC
Chapter Two

The scene changes to the deck. The passengers are waving good-bye to the crowd below. Jack and Fabrizio run up to the rail. Jack immediately begins to wave and yell good-bye to the Southampton crowd.

"You know somebody?" Fabrizio asked, confused as to why his friend was waving good-bye to a group of people they didn't know.

"Of course not! That's not the point!" Jack continued to wave.

"Good-bye! Good-bye!"

Fabrizio kisses his hand and blows the kiss to the crowd. "I will never forget you!"

Jack:
There's a sad sort of clanging
From the clock in the hall
And the bells in the steeple too
And up in the nursery an absurd little bird
Is popping out to say cuckoo.

Fabrizio:
Cuckoo, cuckoo.

Jack:
Regretfully they tell us cuckoo, cuckoo
But firmly they compel us cuckoo, cuckoo
To say good-bye...

Fabrizio:
Cuckoo!

Passengers:
...to you.

Jack, Fabrizio, and Passengers:
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night.

Fabrizio:
I hate to go and leave this pretty sight.

Jack, Fabrizio and Passengers:
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, adieu.

Passenger:
(pushes between Jack and Fabrizio)
Adieu, adieu, to you and you and you.

Jack, Fabrizio, and Passengers:
So long, farewell, au revoir, auf Wiedersehen.

Jack:
I'd like to stay and taste my first champagne.

Jack, Fabrizio, and Passengers:
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good-bye.

Fabrizio:
I leave and heave a sigh and say good-bye--good-bye!

Jack:
I'm glad to go, I cannot tell a lie
I flit, I float, I fleetly flee, I fly.

Cora:
(yawning)
The sun has gone to bed and so must I
So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye.

Southampton Crowd:
Good-bye!

*****

We have seen how Rose had decorated the Millionaire Suite with several paintings by Monet, Degas, and Picasso. Now we are focused on the bow, where Jack and Fabrizio have headed. They lean far over and look down at the sparkling ocean. Jack enthusiastically indicates several dolphins, which swim in front of the ship.

Fabrizio: I can see the Statue of Liberty already. Very small, of course.

Jack grins and spreads his arms.

Jack: (exclaiming) I’m the king of the world!

He begins to sing:

Are you thinking what I'm thinking
Every little moment
Every special word
Has so much meaning that I'm feeling you're completing my world
But I've tried to say this so long
But the words don't come when you love someone
It's just too hard to say
How do I say, say
Say this to you
How do I prove my love
How do I say this to you
How do I prove my love
How do I say, say
Oh yeah
Oh beautiful
For spacious skies
For amber waves of grain
For purple mountain
Majesty
Above the fruited plain
America
America
God shed his grace on me
And crown thy good with brotherhood.

Fabrizio:
From sea to shining sea
America
America
Oh beautiful
For heroes proved
He liberates
He strives
Who mourn themselves
A country loved
In mercy more than life.

Jack and Fabrizio:
America
America
God shed his grace on thee
Yeah
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea
America
America
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea
Yeah
America
America
America
And crown
With brotherhood
From sea to shining sea
America the beautiful
From sea to shining sea.

The ship sails on across the ocean and slowly moves out of sight.
