ANOTHER CHANCE
Chapter Two
Rose was awakened
by the feel of a moist cloth on her forehead. She opened her eyes to find that
she was in someone's stateroom. Second class, she guessed. Then she saw Cal.
"What are you
doing here?" she sputtered. "How did I get here?"
"I saw you
faint up on deck. I couldn't let you stay there. God knows what would have
happened to you!" His voice dropped. "I thought you were dead."
"You should
have checked under Rose Dawson!" she screamed.
"Calm down,
Rose. It's not good for your health."
"Was it good
for my health when you tried to shoot me?"
Cal breathed
deeply. "Rose, I'm so sorry. It's just--"
"Cal,
apologies won't do either of use any good. You can't take anything back."
"No, but I can
make reparations."
"What on earth
do you mean?"
"Look in the
left pocket of my coat you're wearing."
Rose dug into the
pocket and pulled out her engagement ring and the Heart of the Ocean.
"Oh, Cal. How?
I mean--"
"I put them in
there before I gave you the coat. Keep them. You'll need money."
"Thank you. I
maybe able to sell the ring, but I won't sell the necklace. It's all I have
left of Jack." Rose started sobbing.
"I understand.
You can't live off the ring forever, though. You need a job."
"Any
ideas?"
"Rose, I would
like you to come and work for me."
