Preparing Your Pet For Italy

Countryside View

You are allowed to bring up to two pets with you to Italy on the Air Mobility Command (AMC) flight. You will be charged for excess baggage to transport you pet(s). Be sure to let the personnel department know that you will be bringing a pet with you when you schedule your flight, as pets travel space available. You must also let your sponsor know if and how many pets you are bringing with you as he/she will need to let the TLA Hotel know.

You are responsible for providing an animal carrier for your pet. AMC will not ship any pet over 100 pounds. This amount is the total weight of both your pet, and the carrier. I had a friend transfer to Naples in April '98, they had a dog that weighed 66 pounds and a carrier with a weight of 30 pounds. They were charged $85.00 as excess baggage. Do not take this amount as gospel, I'm assuming the rates are always subject to change, but this will at least give you a "ballpark" figure to play with.

You need to know that if you plan to live in government housing at the Support Site, no pets are allowed. Some of the government "parcos" (neighborhoods) located off the Support Site do allow one animal. There are no exotic pets of any kind allowed.

There is no quarantine period in Italy, but, you will be required to have a current rabies immunization record. The pet(s) must have had the rabies shot not more than 12 months and not less than 30 days prior to transfer. A veterinary health certificate stating personal identification of the owner and a detailed description of the animal stating to it's good health is also required. This certificate can be gotten from your current vet, it is good for only 30 days from the date of the examination, so please take this into consideration when making the appointment with the vet.

There are only limited veterinary services at Agnano. If your pet is old or requires special treatment it is recommended that you not bring it. Once you are here you will be required to get a "chip" placed in your pet(s) ear. The is used only for identification purposes.
