Introduction

The idea behind the Elated PageKits is that you can either use the ideas here as is, and develop them from our startpoints, or you can take the bits that you need (like the basic frameset) and customise them for your own use. We hope you'll also find the PageKits educational. Obviously, to make the best use of them you'll need to know some basic HTML.

About This PageKit

This is a 'Kit based around a surfing idea, but mainly it's a content-heavy design that coud easily be adapted to different uses by changing that one picture.

The original photo has obviously been extensively modified. This was achieved by turning up the contrast to give quite a "jagged" and saturated photo, then removing the background. It was a decision to make that cutout pretty rough and ready, to compliment the design. When the background had been knocked out, we just filled the remaining area with the colour, so there was no tonal differences within the photo, and leaving just the ragged outline we were after.

The text areas on the 'Kit are bounded by those ragged edge sections. These are just distressed edges, with one for top, one for bottom and a repeating pattern as a TD background image to give the edges. This means that however much text you put in, the edges will effectively "scale" with it!

The 'Kit was made on an Apple G3 machine running photoshop 6 and BBedit. The photo was taken by us in Devon, England on Saunton Sands with a Canon IXUS digital camera.

Hints & Tips

The font size and face is controlled by a stylesheet linked to from the pages (default.css). It also controls the neat rollover effects seen in IE (but not Netscape, which doesn't support it) If you want to change all this open up default.css and edit this code:

<style>

body { font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; color: #ffffff }

td { font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 9px; color: #ffffff }

.text {color: #ffffff; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 9px; text-decoration: none}

.textdark {color: #666633; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 9px; text-decoration: none}

.textdark2 {color: #333300; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 9px; text-decoration: none}

.textlight {color: #FFFFCC; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 9px; text-decoration: none}

.header {font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 11px; font-weight: bold; color: #333300 }

a:hover {text-decoration: none; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; font-size: 10px;color: #ffffff}

a.light:link {color: #CC3300; font-family: verdana, arial, helvetica, sans-serif; font-weight: normal; font-size: 10px; text-decoration: none}

...to be whatever you want for colours, links etc, being careful to preserve the syntax. Note that there's different colours of links depending on what colour box they're sitting on.

Specifically:

"The Pagekits are free to use on any type of site, provided you do not redistribute them in any form on the Web or on a CD-ROM (whether for free or for profit). They are free for "end-users" only. What this means in English is that if you're a business wanting to use a Pagekit for your own bar/bookshop/restaurant etc, then that's fine, even if you're taking money over the site. What's not fine is if you're a web designer using a Pagekit to produce a website for a client, whether you're getting paid for it or not. You may also not take Kits (or any of the free stuff) and put them up on your site for download or examples. The above legalese element is legally binding and failing to comply means you are infringing international copyright law."

And Finally...

There are many more Kits of varying kinds as well as some Web Design tips at our website:
