Upon leaving his friends, Goku heads off for Kamesennin's island to undergo his training. However, Goku is not the only person who wishes to train under the Muten Roshi, a young Shaolin monk named Kuririn is there as well. Kamesennin's training comes at a price, and the two kids bring the wanted criminal, Lunch, to Kamesennin as payment.
Soon enough, Kuririn and Goku are put through several months of intensive training that pushes them past human limits. The two children do not give up though, they have a goal to reach-entering the Tenkaichi Budokai. Having finally completed their training, they and Kamesennin head off to enter the famed competition.
After constant matches in the preliminary rounds, Goku, Kuririn, and Yamcha qualify for the actual tournament. The Tenkaichi Budokai contains some fierce competition, namely Jackie Chun, who is actually the Muten Roshi in disguise. It all comes down to Goku and Jackie Chun in the final round. While it is a very close match, in the end the teacher bests the student.
With the tournament over, Goku decides to go searching for his grandfather's Dragonball, and heads out on another quest...
