Chapter 30

They arrived to find the forest burned down to the ground and still smoking. All of the once tall, proud pine trees were nothing but blackened, ugly stumps, and smoke was still curling up from them, creating a haze over the horizon. The flames were no longer burning, but there were still bright spots of orange embers and small hotspots of fire everywhere. Juunana-gou’s cabin was nothing but an unrecognizable lump of burnt wood in the center of the clearing; the only recognizable thing from it was the remains of a fireplace sticking out of the burning mess like a tower. Amid the burning destruction stood a very calm and tired-looking Piccolo. His arms were crossed over his chest and he was no longer wearing his cape or his turban. He was looking down at what appeared to be the unconscious body of Juunana-gou lying in a sea of ashes. Gokuu frowned grimly when he noted the destruction of the forest. He didn’t consider himself to be a rabid environmentalist, but the destruction of beautiful things on Earth always made him uncomfortable. He knew it wasn’t Piccolo’s fault that the forest had been burned, but he still felt bad about it.

Piccolo didn’t even look up as they appeared and began walking towards him. He merely uncrossed his arms and flicked a piece of burning ash off Juunana-gou’s shirt. He looked a little annoyed. “It’s about time you got here.”

Koronu gave him a look. “It appears you were quite capable of taking care of yourself. Did you have to burn down the entire forest in order to subdue him? Or did you just do this out of boredom while you were waiting for us?”

He smirked in reply. “The fight got a little out of hand.”

With sigh, Gokuu stepped up and took a look at Juunana-gou, turning him over and brushing the black off of the android’s face. He remained unconscious. Piccolo had done the right thing by refraining from killing him, but now they were presented with a major problem. He wasn’t dead and they wouldn’t kill him, but how were they going to stop him from hurting anyone else? As much fun as it sounded, he knew that they couldn’t keep fighting him over and over again and knocking him out. It just wasn’t rational, especially if this was an unfixable problem. If Juunana-gou was going to remain like this for the rest of his life, that meant they would have to constantly fight him for years and years trying to keep him under control. They couldn’t possibly do that. It had to end somewhere. He just hoped it wouldn’t have to end in death.

“Now what are we going to do with him?” He asked his mother and Piccolo. “We can’t kill him.”

Koronu looked down at the android thoughtfully and placed her hands on her hips. Behind her, her unruly tail waved the smoke away from her. “Isn’t there some place where we could just keep him? Cage him or something?”

Gokuu thought that was a pretty good idea. If they could just keep him in confinement for awhile, maybe they could come up with a better solution and try to turn him back into the normal, peaceful jinzouningen that he used to be. However, Piccolo quickly quelled his enthusiasm. He crossed his long green arms again and looked at them both disdainfully.

“No cage is going to hold him.” He snapped at Koronu. “You have no idea what kind of power the jinzouningen have. Their capacity for destruction is monstrous. If we put him in some kind of a cell, he would simply break out of it.”

She gave him a frustrated look and wrapped her tail tightly around her waist. “What are we going to do then? Bash him in the head every time he wakes up? We have to do something. I refuse to just let him go. If we left him here, he would only wake up and cause more damage, threaten more lives. It would be stupid to just leave him here and let him go. Especially since we just worked so hard to subdue him.”

Piccolo listened to her with a hardened expression, then looked back down at Juunana-gou again. Gokuu could tell that Piccolo had been thinking about the situation just as much as he had. He was hoping that Piccolo would have some ideas on what to do, but it seemed as though he was just as puzzled by their predicament. He didn’t blame the Namek for being confused. Gokuu was pretty confused himself. On one hand, he wanted to keep the Earth safe and keep any kind of danger away from his family and his friends. But on the other hand, Juunana-gou was Kuririn’s brother-in-law. He was a part of his best friend’s family. He couldn’t kill him without Kuririn’s consent, and even if he was given consent, he would still be hurting Marron and Juuhachi-gou as well. He thought about Juuhachi-gou briefly and shook his head. He didn’t even want to think about what would happen if Juuhachi-gou had fallen as well.

“Maybe we should kill him.” Piccolo said suddenly. He nudged the android’s body gently with his foot.

“No….No, we can’t do that.” Gokuu insisted. “He’s part of Kuririn’s family.”

Koronu smiled at him smugly. “Well, I don’t see Kuririn here trying to stop you. Besides, after what he did to his daughter, I’m sure the little man would be after blood anyway.”

“No, Gokuu’s right.” Piccolo relented with a sigh. “We can’t kill him.”

Gokuu thought about what his mother had said. He ignored the ‘little man’ remark, but the rest of it made sense. If someone had tried to hurt Goten or Gohan, he would be a little more than angry; Kuririn probably felt the same way. But nothing was for sure and Gokuu wasn’t going to act on anything until he found out how Kuririn’s family felt about. Until then, they were just going to have to think of some other way to keep Juunana-gou from hurting anyone. He wasn’t sure just how they were going to do that, but he did have an idea. There were all kinds of inventions lurking around Capsule Corporation. He was certain that at least one of them could possibly keep the jinzouningen from causing any trouble. If they took Juunana-gou there and searched around a bit, they were sure to find something. And if not, they could at least get some ideas from the smartest people on Earth. Capsule Corporation was quite far from here, but Gokuu felt certain that Juunana-gou would not wake up for awhile. That would buy them the time they needed to figure something out.

“Then what are we going to do?!” Koronu yelled at them angrily. “Stand around and talk about him all day?”

Gokuu nodded at the unconscious Juunana-gou. “I think we just might have to take him with us.”

Koronu, who still appeared angry that they hadn’t taken her opinion into consideration, gave him an exasperated glare. “Take him with us where? Where are we going?!”

He looked over at her, surprised at her tone. She never had much patience to begin with, but an outburst like this was a little unlike her. He never thought about what his mother might be feeling about all of this, but as he looked into her dark eyes, he understood. This was her new home; her new peaceful home, where she didn’t have to fight and nothing was threatening her life or the lives of the people she cared about. And now that her new home was being threatened by something like this, she just wanted to get it over with and defeat it as quickly as possible. She just didn’t want to feel as though she had to fight for her freedom and her life again. She had done that for years on the planet Vejiita and on Sukuashi as well. And now that she had finally found a place that accepted her, it was being threatened. He didn’t blame her for being so upset and made a mental note to talk to her about it later. She should know straight off that danger and trouble followed him around relentlessly. There was nothing they could ever do to escape from it. But that certainly didn’t mean their lives were doomed. Whenever a problem came up, they just dealt with it; they stayed calm and fought as hard as they could, and so far they had not met an enemy or a problem that they couldn’t conquer.

“I think we should go to Capsule Corporation.” Gokuu told them. “Bulma isn’t around anymore, but maybe Trunks or Tayhei could help us come up with something. It’s our best shot, since we can’t kill him and we can’t just leave him here. We have to find some other way to keep him in line.”

She accepted his answer with a nod. Her eyes rose up to the horizon and she brushed her thick black hair away from her face. She held her mouth tightly for a moment, then spoke the words that they were all dreading: “What about the other jinzouningen?”

Gokuu cast a wary glance down at Juunana-gou’s unconscious body and sighed. “Let’s just pray the same thing isn’t happening to her.”

Juuhachi-gou lost control over herself no more than two minutes after she escaped from her house. The evil part of her, the one that she had been fighting against, eagerly regained its position and shoved her back into the corner. It was a horrible feeling to be trapped inside and be unable to speak or move and or do anything but watch what was going on around her. She couldn’t even close her eyes to hide the world and the other Juuhachi-gou’s evil intentions. It was all laid out before her as the hills and forests of the world flew by them. The other Juuhachi-gou had increased her speed and flight and seemed to be heading in the direction of Satan City, which made Juuhachi-gou sick to her stomach. She was frightened of what was going to happen next, terrified of the damage that she knew she was capable of causing. But as much as she wanted it to stop, as much as she wanted to force the evil away, she couldn’t. She was trapped inside of a body that wasn’t hers, forced to watch everything through emotionless, ice blue eyes.

She felt completely helpless. There was nothing that she could do. If she were able to, she would have cried then, would have completely given up. She had used up her last bit of energy to save her husband’s life, but now it looked as though she were being punished for it. As if to admonish her for her selfishness, this evil Juuhachi-gou that she was trapped inside of was going to take away more lives. There would be no other reason for heading towards Satan City, and she could practically see the evil plan that was forming. She felt like screaming. She didn’t want to hurt anyone. Sure, she had never been that connected with anyone outside of her family, but that didn’t mean that she didn’t care about the rest of the world. Besides, killing was something that Dr. Gero had wanted her to do, and she hated that man so much that she would never do anything that he asked of her.

Her mind traveled back to the airship that they flew to Sukuashi in. To the conversation that she had with Bulma in the privacy of her room. She remembered the way that Bulma had looked; her eyes were still wet from crying and her turquoise hair had been messy and all over the place. She had looked mean and tough, but Juuhachi-gou had seen right through all of that. Despite the fact that the woman yelled all of the time and enjoyed making Kuririn look like an idiot, Bulma actually had a good heart. She had known this from the first time that they spoke. Whatever Bulma acted like on the outside, she was a totally different person on the inside. On the inside, she was soft and fragile, just like any other woman. And she had wanted to help her. She had wanted to help Juuhachi-gou become human again.

“This is important. I need to know about Dr. Gero, about what I am.”

“You’re jinzouningen! A damn vacuum cleaner! A windup toy! Is that want you wanted to hear?!” Bulma had said. She was annoyed and in a horrible mood.

“That is not what I meant. I want to know if there is any possible way to become completely one hundred percent human. Is there some sort of procedure that I could go through, some certain operation or any other way to get the machine parts out of me? I am tired of feeling like this. I don’t want to be a cyborg. I just want to be normal.”

“I don’t know, Juuhachi-gou. I don’t know.”

“Could we go through the old plans for Juunana-gou and myself? There has to be some way. If he created us from normal humans, then there should be a way to reverse what he has done and be a normal human again. I know with Juuroku-gou it would have been hopeless, but I am still part human.”

And then Bulma’s face had softened. For whatever reason, her words had managed to move the woman and convince her that something had to change. Her deep blue eyes found Juuhachi-gou’s quickly and she made her promise:

“Hai, Juuhachi-gou, I’ll do all that I can to help you.”

But she had never been able to help. She had died before she even got the chance. When Bulma died, Juuhachi-gou’s every hope of becoming human had died with her. The woman that had shown her amazing kindness by offering to help; the only person that would have been able to help was gone. And now Juuhachi-gou was left with nothing. It was too late. The jinzouningen part of her had completely taken over and she didn’t think there was any turning back. All she could do was stay helplessly trapped inside of a body that was no longer hers, and watch in horror as Satan City appeared over the horizon.

The sun had just risen and was playing above the skyscrapers of the city as she flew. Clouds ran past her face, tinged golden by the rising sun and the air felt warm and inviting --- the most perfect temperature of the summer day before it grew unbearably hot and stifling. The city was just beginning to wake up now; cars were starting to fill the empty streets and the sounds of horns and shouting could already be heard. As the sun begin to glisten on the walls of the skyscrapers, curtains were pulled open and lights began to turn on, dotting the giant walls with small yellow squares. The fluorescent lights of storefronts were switching on, and people began to appear on the sidewalks, most of them carrying a briefcase in one hand and a steaming cup of coffee or a newspaper in the other. It was the beginning of the work week in Satan City and the start of a busy day for most. By the time night fell, the city would be crawling with people and the streets would be teaming with vehicles. This was just the start.

She paused in flight and hovered above the already busy city. Ice blue eyes stared down at all of the people, emotionless and detached.

It was a child that first noticed her; a small boy that was on his way to daycare with his mother. He caught sight of her on a whim, raising his eyes to the sky to watch a red balloon that had escaped from a vendor on the street. He watched her hanging there for a moment and tilted his head in curiosity. He tugged at his mother’s hand urgently and pointed, a wide smile on his innocent face. Paying no attention to him, the mother continued to yell into her cellphone, her hand clutching the little boy’s tightly as she ranted. She dragged him down the sidewalk, still yelling into her phone, and the little boy turned his head and watched as the figure and the sky begin to glow. His footsteps paused and he ignored his mother’s rebuke as he watched the figure with growing curiosity. Light began to form there, burning blue and blinding against the orange of the rising sun. It grew bigger and bigger until it nearly engulfed the entire figure.

Then up in the sky, Juuhachi-gou began attacking the city.
