*~The Dream Of A Lifetime~*

Chapter 14

Nickolas leaned up against a tree and just watched Valondra. She was sitting on the ground throwing rocks into the water. He just continued watching her for the longest time and thinking of many reasons why she wanted to see him. He started walking towards her, as Valondra threw another rock in the water and stood up. He watched as she started to turn around, but stopped and smiled, as she looked at the ground. Nickolas watched her bend down and pick up a flower; still smiling. Nickolas had to smile himself, but his smile

faded, as Valondra’s did and she threw the flower to the ground. Valondra turned to walk back to the house, but stopped when she saw Nickolas.

They just looked at each other for a moment, as it started thundering and Nickolas said, “That doesn’t sound promising.” Valondra didn’t say anything. “I know I’m late and I’m very sorry.”

“You have your reasons; just like I have mine for wanting you here.”

“I’m hoping your reasons are good.” He moved closer to her.

“I did some thinking last night and this morning.” She walked away from him and he just looked at her. “And I’ve decided I don’t want to marry you.”

“But, Princess, why?” He walked over to her. “I love you.”

“Nick, it’s not that I don’t want to it’s just that I can’t. Walking in and seeing you with that little tramp made me realize something.”

“What?”

“What if it happens when we’re married? I will completely breakdown.”

“It won’t happen ever again. Actually in my mind it never happened. I look at it as a very bad nightmare.”

“It’s not that easy for me, Nicky.” She turned to look at him. “You didn’t walk in on me kissing someone else so you don’t know how I feel right now.”

“That’s the thing, Lon, I didn’t kiss anyone. I explained everything to you. Bridgett came to me. I didn’t ask her to come to my house. I could care less if I ever see her again.” Valondra just looked at him, as he took her hands in his. “The only person I care about seeing is you. I want to see you for the rest of my life and have you by my side. Now look me in the eye and tell me you don’t want to marry me.”

Valondra looked into Nickolas’ eyes and then walked away. She turned from him and said, “I don’t want to hurt you, Nickolas, but I can’t marry you.” She looked at her left hand and took the ring off and held it out to Nickolas. “Here. Take it and go.” Nickolas walked over to her and as he took the ring from her fingers, he made sure she felt his touch. Valondra looked at him ready to say something, but she stopped herself and looked away. She pulled her hand from Nickolas’ and he just looked at her. Nickolas started walking away then stopped and turned to look at Valondra. He walked back over and stood in front of her. He wiped the tears from her eyes and she moved away from him. “Please go so not to make it harder on yourself.”

Nickolas watched her sit down on the ground. He picked up a flower and then sat beside her. He handed her the flower saying, “I just want to know one thing, Princess, did you ever want to marry me?”

Valondra slowly took the flower and said, “Marrying you was my dream. I wanted nothing more than to become Mrs. Nick Carter, but that’s not going to happen now or in the future. The actual question is, did you ever want to marry me? Or did you just ask me; because it’s something you knew I wanted?”

“I asked you to marry me, because it was something I wanted as much as you. If I didn’t want you to be my wife, I wouldn’t have spent $500,000 on a ring for someone I didn’t love.”

“Well, you can take it back and get your money.” She wiped a tear away. “Because there ain’t going to be no wedding for us.”

“Why not?”

“Because of what I saw. Every time I look at you all I see is you in a towel and that twit in her undies and you guys are kissing.”

“Princess, you’re everything to me.”

“I know, Nick. I know that now, but I can’t be with you when there’s that one little thing that will somehow get between us.”

“It won’t. I promise. I want your dream to come true.”

“No.” She shook her head. “It can’t.”

“Because you don’t want it to anymore. But why?” She didn’t answer him or look at him. “I want to make this right between us and you need to tell me how.” He took her hand and looked at her. “Please don’t shut me out of your life. I love you with all my heart and soul.”

“I love you too, Baby, but I think I loved you too much.” She wiped her eyes again.

They just looked at each other and Nickolas pushed the hair away from Valondra’s face. They just gazed deeply into each other’s eyes as it began to rain. At the same time they both got closer and Nickolas asked, “Why are you starting to run away from me after three years?”

“I don’t want to get hurt.” Her voice was barely a whisper and their lips met in a kiss. They kissed, as it continued raining, and the kiss was hot and passionate. The minutes passed and they were minutes that felt like heaven to Nickolas until Valondra pushed him away.

“What’s wrong?”

“I can’t do this to myself. I just can’t.” She got up and started running back to the house.

Nickolas got up and started running after her. He followed her to the house and inside. He stopped her in the kitchen, but had to chase her upstairs. He opened the door to her room and saw her standing there looking out the window crying. He walked over, stuck his arms around her and asked, “What can’t you do?”

“Please leave. I don’t want to ask you again.”

“Not without an explanation.” She wiggled herself out of his hold and walked away.

“Take this box with you.” She gave him the box of stuff. “Now go please.”

“First answer my question.” He put the box down and sat beside her on the bed. He noticed the roses, but didn’t say anything. “What can’t you do?”

“Honestly, I don’t know. I’m so confused right now, Nicky.” He put his arms around her and just held her. “I’m confused, because I’ll love you and then I’ll hate you. I hate you right now, but I also love you at the same time.”

“I’ll make it better. I promise.”

“Nothing you do will change what I saw.”

“Will you leave me try?” Valondra just looked at him. “I don’t want to be away from you any longer. It’s killing me.”

“Nick, I have to know I can trust you. I have to know you’ll be completely faithful and honest to me.”

“Can this be a start?”

Valondra just looked at Nickolas, as he went to kiss her. Their lips almost touched when she got up. “Please go. I want to be left alone.”

Nickolas sighed. “Alright.” He got up and walked over to her. He stood in front of her and put his hands on her shoulders. “I’m not giving up on us.”

“I don’t want you to.” He kissed her forehead then walked away. “Don’t forget the box.”

“Don’t worry. I got it.” He looked at her before going out the door with new found hope. He didn’t want to leave her, but he would do anything she wanted at the moment no matter how painful.

Valondra switched the CD in her stereo and turned it on. She picked up a photo of her and Nickolas and walked over to the window seat. She sat down and looked at the photo a second then looked out the window at the falling rain, as the music began.

“We walked the narrow path…beneath the smoky skies…sometimes you can barely tell the difference…between darkness and light…do you have faith…in what we believe…the truest test is when we cannot…when we cannot see…”

That was so true on her part. She couldn’t see. She didn’t even know if she had faith.

“I hear pounding feet in the…in the streets below and the…and the woman crying and the…and the children know that there…that there’s something wrong…and it’s hard to believe…that love will prevail…oh, it won’t rain all the time…the sky won’t fall forever…and though the night seems long…your tears won’t fall forever…”

Wouldn’t they? She didn’t know. That’s all they were doing since…that afternoon. They wouldn’t stop.

Would love prevail? She didn’t know that either. “Oh, when I’m lonely…I lie awake at night…and I wish you were here…I miss you…can you tell me…is there something more to believe in…or is this all there is…in the pounding feet, in the…in the streets below and the…and the window breaks and…and a woman falls, there’s…there’s something wrong, it’s…it’s so hard to believe…that love will prevail…”

Yes it was hard to believe. She fell in the good way and the bad way. She missed Nickolas and she wanted him there with her.

“Oh it won’t rain all the time…the sky won’t fall forever…and though the night seems long…your tears won’t fall…your tears won’t fall…your tears won’t fall forever…”

Again wouldn’t they? She wanted him. She wanted Nickolas. She couldn’t be with him though, because of that one little thing. That one little thing was stopping them. She couldn’t get pass it. Bridgett was just a psychopathic tramp and she knew that. She would do anything in breaking up her and Nickolas. She left her do it too. She left the tramp win. She broke it off and now she was miserable.

“Last night I had a dream…you came into my room…you took me into your arms…whispering and kissing me…and telling me to still believe…but then the emptiness of a burning sea…against which we see…our darkest of sadness…until I felt safe and warm…I fell asleep in your arms…when I awoke I cried again…for you were gone…oh, can you hear me…”

She did have a dream last night. Nickolas did come into her room and took her in his arms. They were kissing and happy, but she didn’t get the chance to feel safe and warm. Or fall asleep in his arms. But she did awake and he was gone and she cried.

“It won’t rain all the time…the sky won’t fall forever…and though the night seems long…your tears won’t fall forever…it won’t rain all the time…the sky won’t fall forever…and though the night seems long…your tears won’t fall…your tears won’t fall…your tears won’t fall forever….”

The song came to an end and Valondra looked at the picture, as it started playing again.
