Chapter 4

As A.J. drove to meet the person, he began thinking how his life was before he met Cassandra. He remembered the good times he had with this person.

"We were happy. Why did I ever think of leaving a good thing for someone like Cassandra?" he thought as their song began to play on the radio.

"I was such a fool, but at least she had Chad to keep her happy this last year," he said out loud as he thought back. He remembered when they met, Open House at Caroline’s school, she was Caroline’s teacher. She was so beautiful.

"I wonder why she asked me to dinner? I guess I will have go in and see," he said taking a deep breath as he went in.

When A.J. walked in, he spotted a friend of the person he was going to see and asked if she was there. He pointed A.J. to where she was sitting.

As A.J. walked towards her he got nervous. He didn't know what to make of Carla inviting him to dinner. He knew that she was happy with Chad and he also knew that she would know what happened with Cassandra. Even though he was nervous, he was still curious as to why he was invited to dinner by his ex-love.

"Hey Beautiful!" he said when he saw her smiling face. She stood and they hugged.

"Hey Sexy!" she said as A.J. kissed her on the cheek.

As they sat down across from each other, A.J. remembered how much he loved being with her. She was always there for him and they always had so much fun. He remembered when Howie, Jackie, Carla, and himself went out to dinner. It was when Howie and Jackie were just newlyweds and Carla and him were just friends. It was a night he would never forget. It was the night he discovered he was in love with Carla.

"Why did you ask me out to dinner?" A.J. asked.

"Does there have to be reason why I asked you dinner? Why can't a girl just ask her best friend out for dinner?" Carla asked and smiled at him.

"I miss that smile,” he said to himself.

"Yes, of course… but honey I know how you are," A.J. said with a little laugh.

"Really?" she smiled.

"Yep" he smiled and took her hand in his.

"So what are you doing here? Where's Chad?" he asked her curiously.

"He's not here, he's back in New York," Carla replied.

"Does he know you're here?" A.J. asked.

"I think he does, but I'm not sure," Carla said quietly.

When Carla got quiet A.J knew that there was something wrong and got worried.

"What happened?" he asked again.

"I don't want to talk about it. I will be fine I promise," she said.

Throughout the evening, AJ and Carla talked as they ate. He had made her laugh, he made her cry. They knew they both missed each other and were thinking about getting back together.

"What happened with Cassandra and you? I read in the paper that you guys had a nasty break up. What really happened?" Carla asked.

“Cheating on the wedding day,” he said simply.

"Oh my God! Are you okay?" she asked.

"Yeah, I'm fine. I was out of it for a while. I'm much better now," A.J. said.

"It's been a while since I had a dinner like this," she said putting her fork down. Their song began to play and she looked at A.J. smiling.

"We have to dance," she said and led him away from the table.

As they began to dance, A.J. remembered how it felt to have her in his arms, the way her hair smelled, and the way she fit so well in his arms. He missed everything about her and he sighed as Carla began to cry. It was almost two years since she was in his arms last.

"I need to sit," Carla said quietly as the song changed.

"Nope you're not going anywhere," AJ said.

"But Alex, I'm tired," Carla whined.

"Just one more please?" AJ pleaded.

"Okay, just one more," Carla said.

"You know you are so cute when you whine," A.J. laughed.

"Oh very funny McLean! Just dance," she laughed a little. While A.J. and Carla were dancing, she had grown very quiet. Listening to the song had caused her to think of Chad and what had happened between them. She began to cry.

"What's wrong? Are you okay?" A.J. asked.

"No, I'm not,” she said crying.

“Do you want to talk about it?" A.J. asked.

"Would you just hold me, please?" she asked.

"Of course," he said and held her.

"Thanks," she looked up at him and leaned forward to kiss him. They were both enjoying the kiss in their own world. Nothing really mattered to them. After a while they realized they were lost in the kiss and both pulled back.

"What did we just do?" Carla said shocked.

"We kissed," A.J. answered.

"You think anyone saw?" Carla wondered.

"No, I don't think anyone saw. Why, am I a bad kisser?" he asked as he pouted.

"I didn't say that," she said and laughed.

"Okay then," he started to kiss her again.

"Alex! No, we can't. Not like this," she said.

"Okay, tell you what," he stopped kissing her.

"What?" She looked at him. "How about we just go back to my place? You know, watch some movies? It gets lonely in my big house. I promise no touching until you're ready,” he said.

"Oh, I don't know, let me think about it," Carla said.

"Please?" A.J. gave her a pleading look.

"Oh, alright. I hate when you do that. You are so cute," she said.

"It always works," he laughed.

"Okay let's go!" she said getting her jacket.

"Thank you." He kissed her cheek. With that they left for A.J.’s house, both looking forward to remembering old times.
