ON HOLDING STEPS

As
I try to touch you
your sur-blind eyes
remind me that
there is hardly any recognition
of the love
you have received.

Your fragile hands
grasp tightly, transmitting
a fear that I have never experienced
and then as
you carefully try to
balance yourself,
unsteady steps are just another
reminder that
your journey has long
been left unnoticed.

I will try to help you
walk but
as much as I would like,
I can not remove every
stone from your path
or catch you each time
you start to stumble;

because someday
(after I have gone from here)
when music plays and your
smile is more than
just a facial expression

(HOPEFULLY)
there will be someone new
to try to teach
you love.

I will then be content
to believe that
the laughter in your eyes
comes from the deepest
depths of your soul,
with some promise of
new adventures....
