Legendary Head Coach Eric Post has made his first move of the 2003-2004 season by naming Jeremy Glass team captain. Jeremy played last season for the Blue Blazers and earned the Nathaniel Zinn award given to the Most Valuable Player for the Blue Blazers during the playoffs. Jeremy will be a Junior this year. He has a type of pride and determination that I hope will spread to the rest of the team.
I sat down with the head coach and the newly appointed captain to talk about the upcoming season and the reason why Jeremy was made captain.
Blue Blazers Reporter (BBR): Coach Post, Why did you feel that Jeremy was good fit to be the team captain?
Coach Post (CP): Jeremy showed great leadership skills as a sophomore. Whenever the team was in desperate need of an emotional boast, he provided it. He does whatever it takes to win. He plays with wreck less abandon. This was especially evident in the double-overtime victory in the playoffs last year. He is a good team leader, a good leader, and a spark.
BBR: Jeremy, You have had two stellar accomplishments in your young career being that you have earned the Nathaniel Zinn award and team captain. Which accomplishment do you feel is most important?
Jeremy Glass (JG): I was getting in a slump last year and was very pleased by my performance in the playoffs, but I was still extremely upset that we didn’t get into the championship. I thought that team communication and simply poor play cost us a chance to go deep into the playoffs. I think being captain will give me more control so I can get the team together and get them to communicate. I was very upset with our team communication last year and as a captain I can make a significant contribution in that area. I’d have to say captain is a greater honor.
BBR: Jeremy, What is your goal for the Blue Blazers this season?
JG: I want the team to dominant and win the Harrison County Parks and Recreation champions.
BBR: What do you plan to do personally to help achieve this goal and how it is being the team captain going to help you achieve this goal?
JG: I’m going to work as hard as I can and hope that work ethic rubs off on the rest of the team. I want to lead the team and make sure the team is properly running the offense. My main goal is to make sure the players get along and communicate as to be able to work well together.
BBR: Jeremy, What is the role of a captain?
JG: I think a captain’s job is to set examples, communicate, and show leadership. I think being the captain is a lot like being a coach in that I get more say into running the ball club. Ability to work with the coach is also extremely important. I think Eric and I work well together and that will be a major factor into a hopefully successful season.
BBR: This question is for both of you. Who is the Blue Blazers biggest rival?
CP: I think it is the definitely the Dooks, but Bridgeport teams as a whole get the intensity up for the game.
JG: The Dooks are a good rival team. I’d also say that the Crazy Squirrels and the Hustlaz are also major rivals. I have to agree with Eric that Bridgeport teams always make for a more heated match-up.
BBR: Jeremy, How do you think having a year in Eric Post’s system help you this year? JG: I don’t know how much it helped because last year we never executed the offense or play as a team. I’m confident that Eric has a grasp of the game and what he wants to do. I’m very comfortable playing for him again.
BBR: What do you think you can do this year as a captain to make sure the communication breakdown that occurred last season doesn’t happen again?
JG: I’m hoping that good communication lines and several preseason practice will help the team form the chemistry that we were seriously lacking last season.
BBR: Eric, Do you think having a definitive captain will solve the chemistry problem from last season?
CP: It’s hard to say right now because we haven’t even gotten the team together. I think a captain will correct things like a player being selfish and become the team leader. As a leader he must deal with problems on the court. As the coach, I can only tell the players what to do, they have to execute. A captain on the court I believe will serve as a role model for the rest of the team, and take away the selfishness that destroys team chemistry.
BBR: Final off the wall question: What is your favorite type of alien autopsy, chip implant or anal probe?
JG: I prefer the anal probe. It makes me feel good sometimes. Hahaha!
I came away from this interview with a positive outlook on the upcoming season. Jeremy and Eric’s work ethics and character will gain anybody’s respect and attention. The goals have been set high for this team and I think this combination has the right tools to reach those goals.
