Installing Ubuntu Intrepid on the Presario R3360

Last updated: 3/19/09

General Hardware Specifications of R3360us, BIOS F.45:

Hardware Components
Status under Linux
Notes
Pentium 4 3.0GHz Works Hyperthreading Enabled
15.4 WXGA TFT Display with Brightview Works No special config needed. 1280x800 is max resolution.
ATI Mobility Radeon 9100 IGP Works 128MB shared memory, see note 1
1024MB, PC2700 DDR, (2x512MB) Works No special procedure required during installation
Firewire (TI TSB43AB21 IEEE1394a-2000 Controller) not tested module=ohci1394
Integrated Network Card (Realtek RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+) Works Module=8139too No special procedure required during installation
Internal 56k Modem not tested--no longer installed not used, so I removed it
HL GWA-4080N Works DVD-RW, just use your preferred cd/dvd burning software
Broadcom BCM4306 B/G wireless mini-pci Works Module=b43 See note 2
65 AHr Lithium-Ion Battery Works No special procedure required during installation
Sound card (ATI IXP150 AC'97 Audio Controller) Works

Module=snd_atiixp No special procedure required during installation

Touchpad Works Right side scrolling does not work, on/off button does

This laptop is operating under Kernel version 2.6.27-11-generic

Notes:

I have not gotten suspend to work and there's a 50% chance of unblanking the screen after closing and opening the lid, also when putting system to sleep. If it does not unblank, I have to hold the power button until it turns off. I have not found a fix for this. Hibernation works fine, though

The fn keys work for changing the brightness/ with no special configuration, same with the hardware volume buttons.

I modified this laptop so it can support dual harddrives. I installed a usb to ide adapter above the dvdrw, where the floppy should be and soldered a usb cable to the leads where the right USB port should be. The port was damaged and I decided this was better (and funner) than trying to replace the USB port. I considered adding a 4 port usb hub instead and using usb keys and a bluetooth adapter, but due to space limitations, had to scrap that idea. With usb and bluetooth adapters getting smaller and using less power, Im sure this will be possible in the near future.

Even though lshw shows the ethernet card connecting at 10MB/s, it is 100MB/s capable. My cable modem only has a 10MB/s connection. Plugging it into a router gives the full 100MB/s

Note1: 3d Aceleration does not work with the fglrx module, only the generic ati/radeon module will allow you to use the display correctly. In fact, just installing the fglrx packages will cause it to only log in using graphics safe mode. I have not found a fix for this yet.

Note2: Wireless works out of box during livecd usage, but after installing, you must use the new driver installer to install the broadcom b43 wireless driver, while using a wired connection. Afterwards, you must manually modprobe module b43 in order to use the wireless (you do this once after logging in and it will stick until you reboot). To fix this, add b43 to the /etc/modules file--create a new line at the bottom of the file and add it there. This will automatically add the module when you start the computer. The wifi button does not work or light up, but the blue wifi light on the corner is on

If anyone knows how to get the wireless button, touchpad scrolling or 3D acceleration working, please let me know

# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
# values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
#
# You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
# For example:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
