Installing Ubuntu Jaunty Final the Inspiron 1100

Last updated: 10/12/09

General Hardware Specifications of Inspiron 1100, BIOS A32:

Hardware Components
Status under Linux
Notes
Celeron 2.6GHz Works No special procedure required during installation
15.4 XGA TFT Display Works No special config needed. 1024x768 is max resolution.
Intel 845GL Works, barely 8MB shared memory, see note 1
1024MB, PC2100 DDR, (2x512MB) Works No special procedure required during installation
Firewire N/A No firewire on Inspiron 1100
Integrated Network Card (Broadcom BCM4401) Works Module=b44 No special procedure required during installation
Internal 56k Modem not tested--no longer installed not used, so I removed it
QSI CDRW/DVD SBW-242 Works Just use your preferred cd burning/dvd playback software
Netgear WG511T Works Module=ath5k_pci See note 2
6.45 AHr Lithium-Ion Battery Works No special procedure required during installation
Sound card (82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Audio Controller) Works

Module=snd_intel8x0 No special procedure required during installation

Touchpad Works Right side scrolling works

This laptop is operating under Kernel version 2.6.28.15-generic

Notes:

Sleep/suspend does not work and requires a hard reboot.

The fn keys work for changing the volume and brightness/contrast with no special configuration.

Note1: 3d Acceleration DOES NOT work. The hardware can't handle it--it barely has enough power to play a DVD. Framerate is noticably low, and is borderline unwatchable. Tried DVD playback in xine, mplayer, and totem. Installed the libdvdcss and w32codecs package from medibuntu for DVD playback.

Note2: System does not have integrated wireless (or a minipci slot for that matter). I am using a Netgear WG511T PCMCIA card, which is based on the Atheros AR5001X+ chipset. Even though the card is designed for 108MBps, ubuntu will only connect at 54MBps.
