Pathway in the new part of the Japanese Garden (circa 2000)

This part of the garden lies beyond the Zen Garden, and was opened to the public in May 2000. I have included this photograph to show a sample of the wonderful shapes the trees have formed there, and which we have taken great pains to work around. This area was very wet and boggy, hence the number of trees that leaned and fell to continue growing in somewhat surreal shapes. They provided a stunning architecture that is equally pleasing in the fullness of summer and the starkness of winter. A haven for the birds and other wildlife, we have consciously retained the 'wild woodland' feel in this area, in contrast to the more formal, contrived design of the initial portion of the garden. Since then more trees have been propped, in the japanese style, to keep pathways open.
