Fall Foliage
October 26 - 28, 2007

Gettysburg - Antietam

Click for Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Forecast

I "need" a road trip . . . how about you???

According to the "Visit Pennsylvania" website:

SOUTHERN REGION (Counties south and east of a line through southern Monroe, Dauphin, Bedford and southeastern Somerset Counties.)

Foliage condition at this time is: 100%

Expected date to reach peak color is: Color should be at its best between October 25 and 29.

Details:

The scarlet flair of Red Maples completed the astounding advance across the southeast this week, as did the yellows and purple hues of Ash and Birch. Leaves have since been falling to the ground, sometimes looking like orange-yellow flurries. There was an explosion of color 7 days ago, due to the especially cold, damp nights we experienced. All species dramatically expanded and brightened their reds, orange and yellows. Best viewing is still found in the broad open valleys, as it affords you views close at hand while seeing the rising beauty of ridges in the distance. Though all portions of the region are equally beautiful, State Route 30 will give the best of all possibilities.

My thoughts.

I just want to say how much I am looking forward to our trip. That said, i do not want anyone to feel obligated to participate in any activity. Each of us will want to do, see some things which may only be important to ourselves.

If we have activities and times which coordinate GREAT. If not, that's cool  too.

I suggest we travel together (caravan),
  • rendevous choice
    • 10:30 AM - Ligonier, Pa.      (map)
    •   8:30 AM - Ohio Turnpike   (map - last Service Plaze before PA.)
When we meet, share copies of what each of us would like to do in Gettysburg and Antietam. When we arrive in Gettysburg, we have a short meeting to coordinate our days. Then let the fun continue.

  • Friday - October 26th
    • meet at the Abigail's Coffeehouse (724-238-9373) in Ligonier, Pa (Route 30) at 10:00 A.M. on October 26th. (map)
      • Have coffee. 10:30 AM continue on Route 30 to Shanksville.
    • Along the way
    • Continue via Route 30 to Gettysburg - arrive approximately 2:30-ish
    • Check in - - relax a bit -  explore - eat - explore - snacks - sleep
    • 5:30 PM - Eat at the Lincoln Diner.
      • The food is typical diner fare, as are the prices. For me, the diner is located near the train station
    • 7:00 PM Ghost Train (confirmed) (click to book)
    • Lodging - - General Lee - Quality Inn (limited rooms) (confirmed)
  • Saturday - October 27th
    • Gettysburg stuff AM
      • 7:30 PM - John bike rides - maybe.
    • Antietam - late PM (self tour)
  • Sunday - October 28th
    • eat 7:00 AM (motel) [John may leave early]
    • Antietam - arrive 8:30-ish
      • continue tour - leave 11:30 - noon-ish
      • lunch
    • continue home via Morgantown, WV (my birthplace)
    • arrive Lodi - 7:00 PM

I "may" bring my bicycle to ride the
Rebel-side of the battlefield.
I will decide closer to our departure date.
It will depend on "the" wife, my "bod"

If I ride i will probably leave around
