We adopted Cheesy, an adult female brown short haired tabby, through a newspaper ad sometime around November 1987. What we didn't know was that she was about to have four kittens; two male and two female. We kept the two male kittens, and gave the two females to a good home. Genius, and his brother Einstein, remained in our home annoying their mother until she could not take it anymore. Cheesy ran away and lived in the woods near our house for many years, being fed by random neighbors. We were forced to give Einstein away, when he continued to damage our next door neighbor's yard (besides, the two brothers spent way too much energy quarreling about property).
During the summer of 1998 we adopted one fourth persian female kitten named Gingko, but during the fall of that year we found that my youngest brother was allergic to cats, and so gave her to our neighbor's mother who lived in the neighborhood as well. So, to make up for the loss, we adopted a Muttley, a small but intelligent mutt. And we still have him today.
On the Sunday before Memorial Day, my family came home from a barbecue. I noticed that Genius had been lying under a chair on our front porch for a day, and never moved. So I picked him up and to my surprise, his legs were limp. He didn't even try to escape my grasp. Right then I knew something was terribly wrong. I laid him down in our utility room on some towels, and his food and water nearby. Genius slowly lapped some water. His breathing was slightly uneven, yet he was calm. The next day (Monday & Memorial Day), I came back from seeing Star Wars: Episode 1 (for the second time) and he had been moved to the backyard where he insisted upon dragging himself by his front feet. Genius's breathing had sped up to panting, and I became more upset. A few hours later, he was gone.
