During the first part of November, 1998, I had an abscessed molar that caused excrutiating pain and swelling. After three days of this self-imposed torture, I finally relented to go to the dentist and get a root canal to save the tooth. The molar was crooked, situated on its side, and lower than my front bottom teeth, thereby making it difficult for the dentist, Dr. Ahmed, to approach it and perform the root canal procedure. There was so much infection and inflammation, the dentist couldn't get the shot of novocain to do its job and numb the painful area while the drilling commenced. While I lay there in pain, silently crying everytime he hit the nerve, I think I realized that after the fourth novocain shot that was to no avail, I really needed some divine intervention. I just wanted Dr. Ahmed to get it over with as quickly as possible.
Around two hours into the root canal, I prayed to myself that one of my spirit guides be there for me and take me out of my body or help me to keep my mind off of the pain. I prayed so hard, crying tears that flowed down each side of my face and into my ears! I prayed that Mother Mary would come to me as I was told that she is one of my spirit guides. I also asked for some confirmation of her presence or any spiritual assistance because I wanted the validation of this (911) contact with spirit. I saw flashes of light, but I thought I was imagining it. Then, I saw an outstretched arm - the right arm and hand with index finger pointing, clothed in a robe of some sorts. Then I had the knowing that this was a shepherd........A shepherd?!?! I analyzed to myself, "there are no sheep around here!" Then I had the knowing that his name was Joachim. Joachim?!?!
Well, the root canal finally ended for that day. As it turned out, I had four nerves instead of one in that tooth. I had a lot of nerve! I had to return for three more appointments.
Later, when I was home, safe and sound, I remembered the name, Joachim, and got on the net to research it as I had no idea who this was or anything about shepards, except that they move flocks of sheep from valley to valley, and that some shepards were near the stable when the baby Jesus was born, adoring the beautiful babe in the manger. Now, I will never forget what I learned that day. The pain was numbed when I read that there was a Joachim who lived in Nazareth, and he married Ann. They could not have children and were blessed with the immaculate conception of Mary. Mary was promised to the temple in order to eventually become the mother who gave birth to the son of God, Jesus. She had to be completely without sin, and this was the divine plan. Joachim was banished from the temple because he did not have children; Ann fretted about not being able to bear children; and an angel appeared to both Joachim and Ann, on separate occasions, to ask for their cooperation and assistance with this miracle to be, on earth.
Oh, by the way, Joachim was a shepherd! He had a flock of sheep, herding them from valley to valley. He guarded them and tended to them......just like he did for me on that traumatic day while I lay in the dental chair.
The Christmas season for me will now be greatly enhanced with the knowledge of the life of Saint Joachim and Saint Ann, as it had been all these years with the lives of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
