One dead, six rescued after boat disaster
By Rajendra Prabhulall
SIX of the seven men who went missing following a recent boat disaster in the Atlantic Ocean, several miles off the Venezuelan coast, have been rescued.

According to reports reaching the Guyana Chronicle, the bloated body of 30-year-old Jainarine Jagdeo of Hampton Court, Essequibo, was found on Friday midday on a deserted Venezuelan beach a short distance from the mouth of Barima River by members of the Venezuelan Coast Guard.

He was identified by several friends from the Pomeroon who had formed themselves into a search party and were in the area at the time of the discovery.

The Chronicle learnt that the members of the Venezuelan Coast Guard were forced to bury the body along the beach close to the Barima River mouth because it was in an advance stage of decomposition.

However, relatives are insisting that they want to see the place where he was finally laid to rest.

The other six men were rescued, badly dehydrated and barely clinging to life, reports said.

The seven were returning to Guyana from a business trip in Venezuela last Sunday night when disaster stuck.

They reportedly thrown into the turbulent waters of the Atlantic Ocean after huge waves split the bow of their fiberglass boat.

Before the boat went down, all, except Jagdeo, had on life jackets.

Two were rescued by fishermen who were working in the area, while another three men were rescued some four days later on the Waini beach in dehydrated conditions. The last one was rescued by fishermen after he held onto their seine.

Jagdeo was married to Loyse on January 29 last.

The widow said that her late husband was very kind and loving.

With tears in her eyes, she sobbed, “he kissed me goodbye at Charity before leaving for Venezuela.” She said that he had promised to be back soon, but added, “he is never coming back.”

Jagdeo’s mother, Sushila said he was her last child.

The distressed woman said when she heard about the accident, she had a belief that he had drowned. “I know I lost him forever”, she cried.

Jagdeo also leaves to mourn three children, brothers and sisters.
