History of the King of the Ring

Mr. Perfect and Bobby HeenanMR. PERFECT
King of the Ring
Jan. 18, 2006 - present

Mr. Perfect entered the 2006 King of the Ring Tournament by virtue of a bye from Mr. Bischoff due to his status as Intercontinental Champion. What seemed like a good start to the tournament for Perfect would soon take a turn, though, as Bischoff announced that Perfect would be defending the Intercontinental title in the first round against the Macho King Randy Savage -- a man Mr. Perfect had always refused to face -- and against Riptide, should they meet in the semifinals. Needless to say, this executive decision by Bischoff did not sit well with the leader of the Perfect Team.

To kick off the night, Mr. Perfect not only beat Savage, but he and Batista viciously assaulted him after the match, ending the career of the Macho King. In the semifinals, Mr. Perfect did, in fact, have to defend his Intercontinental Championship against Riptide, a man that claimed Perfect couldn't beat him "cleanly." Bischoff took steps to assure outside "assistance" didn't occur, stating that he would strip Perfect of his title if it did. With no help from anyone, Mr. Perfect pinned Riptide in a grueling war, retaining his title and advancing to the finals. There, he squared off with a man he won a Slammy with for having the 2005 Match of the Year -- Lance Storm. Perfect jumped Storm near the end of his match with Chris Jericho, who was in the midst of Storm's Sharpshooter, but refusing to submit. His interference caused a DQ, and he took advantage of the situation, assaulting Storm and demanding the final round start immediately. Perfect gained an early edge, but Storm would eventually recover. After another terrific bout between two of the PWF's most technically-sound grapplers, Mr. Perfect would score the fall and become the first King of the Ring.
