The Secret To Success For Underdogs

Thanks for checking out my page. My purpose of making it is to share with you the demented psychological states I have found to be invaluable in becoming a better person. If you're one of those guys who is already a little pissed off at the world, I think you will enjoy this site. My hope is that you will take something away from this and apply it to your life, or maybe share with me some of your own ideas.
"You gotta stand up and fight for your dreams, cuz if you don't, ain't no one gonna." - me

Aside from maybe your family and a few friends, no one in your life wants you to succeed. On your way to work, or to class, look around. People are happy looking down at you, they don't want to consider you as a challenge to their own personal goals: money, girls, good grades, success in sports. Think about this next time you go to the gym, or when you are studying. I think the mentality from an old football coach applies quite well here. Our team consistently had losing records, and he, of course, hoped to change that. He used to say, "Boys, we will no longer be the doormat of this league." A long time ago I decided that starting now, not Monday, not tomorrow, but right now this very second, people will no longer toss me to the side on their way to something better. During practices, he would tell us, "Today, (our rival) is doing 50 pushups, we will do 51." That's what you gotta have in your life: the internal consuming fire to better yourself. To channel your hatred....

“When fans refer to my career, they come up with a lot of nice accolades: the heart, my guys, the courage, the love for the business. The truth is, yeah, some of that came into play….but the main benefit I had was hatred. The ability to take something in my life, to hate it very much, and then to channel it in a very, very useful way. “- Mick Foley

I can’t help it. When I see someone with something I want (better athletic ability, or a hot girl), I get pissed off. But I wouldn’t call it jealousy. It’s more of a feeling of hatred. Not hating the person, but just a feeling of hatred. The quote above came from a very powerful interview given by Mick Foley on WWE’s Monday Night Raw. Luckily, I happened to catch it on tape. The interview is soo inspiring that I have included the word-for-word contents below. The background for the interview is that Mick Foley, a “hardcore” legend in wrestling had been spit on by Randy Orton (a young, very talented athlete) in a previous week when Foley walked out of a match they were scheduled to have. During the next weeks Orton calls Foley a coward and other things, and claims that he, Orton, is the real hardcore legend. Foley calls Orton out after giving the above quote and the interview goes like this:

Foley: “The reason I called you out here was that I’d like to ask a favor of you.”

Orton: “You want a favor from me? I dare ask, what do you want from me.”

Foley: “This may seem out there, this may downright kooky, but what I’d like you to do is spit in my face again.

Orton: …”Do what?”

Foley: “I’m just wondering if maybe that was a fluke, and if you have it here, to do it again, right here in Hershey, PA.”

Orton: “Mick, listen man….”

Foley (knocks the mic out of Orton’s hand): “Listen here you little bastard. I was spilling blood on six continents while you were still latched on to your mother’s breast. And I’ve listened to you run your damn mouth for seven days. Now I’ve got the microphone, I’m talking, you’ll do as you’re told…and I’m telling you. No, I’m ordering you, to spit in my damn face. Do it! Do it! Do it!”

Orton spits on Foley’s face.

Foley: “Why….why..why I oughta….I oughta…..No I’m not gonna hit you Randy. I am not gonna hit you. Not only am I not gonna hit you, I’m gonna take the advice of a very good book I read a little while ago that said ‘..Turn the other check.’ And I’m gonna turn that other check, and I’m gonna ask you to spit on that one as well.”

Foley gets the crowd to chant and convinces Orton to spit on his face again.

Orton spits on Foley’s face once again.

Foley: “Get a good shot of that and realize that its only spit…I’ve been spit on before…and when it comes to you calling me names, well, I have it on good authority that sticks and stones may break my bones, but names will never hurt me. But I’d be willing to bet that whoever came up with that helpful adage was never referred to as Randy Orton’s bitch on national television…And the thing is that people were starting to believe you…But the idea of you as a hardcore legend is one big pile of crap. And take a look cuz this is not just spit anymore, because I also came to realize that when you spit in my face, you spit on my name, you spit on my legacy…and I (Foley begins punching himself in the face and blood pours from his eyes) CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT CANNOT accept that. Do you understand? Because I’ve worked too hard and I’ve suffered too long to have my reputation ruined by you, you little bastard. I’ve seen my ear blown away in Munich, Germany, I’ve seen my skin hanging off the barbwires in Japan, and I’ve been bludgeoned in Nigeria. And now I no longer have to wonder whether I’m gonna have a place in my heart where darkness dwells because I’m already there. I’m already there. And I don’t have to deny the hatred anymore, because not only have I accepted the hatred that exists in my heart, but I’ve welcome it home as a long, lost friend, saying, ‘Welcome home, where’ve you been?’”

How often does someone spit in your face each day? In my mind, everytime I see someone lift more weight than me, or walk down the street with the girl of my dreams, that’s equivalent to having someone spit in my face. They’re implicitly saying, ‘I’m better than you’…’you’re my bitch.’

“WHAT ABOUT MY PRIME, MICK? AT LEAST YOU HAD A PRIME. I AIN’T HAD NO PRIME, I AIN’T HAD NOTHING.” – from Rocky I

It seems like everyone has had a highlight in their life. Something where they were good at: football, basketball, baseball, golf, girls, popularity, humor, intelligence, etc. Not me. Just thinking about this makes me want to go run, and it is 1AM. The whole Rocky series is filled with outstanding quotes and music, but there are a few quotes in particular that I’d like to mention.

  • “Who cared about me yesterday? No one. So I think I’ll just train myself.” – Rocky I

  • “You know how I said that stuff on TV didn’t bother me none? It did.” – Rocky I

  • Announcer: “What is keeping him up, I don’t know. He can’t even get his gloves up to defend himself.” Rocky falls. Mick, Rocky’s trainer, after Rocky was knocked down: “Down, down, stay down. “ Rocky sees Adrianne and gets back up for more.
  • “I ain’t going down no more.” – Rocky II
  • Mick: “This guy doesn’t just want to beat you, he wants to humiliate you, he wants to prove to the whole world that you’re nothing but some kind of freak.” – Rocky II
  • “Look, I gotta fight. I got problems, I gotta fight.” – Rocky V
  • This conversation between Rocky and Adrianne occurred after Rocky agreed to fight Drago. In an earlier fight Drago killed Rocky’s friend. It is outstanding and very motivating. It is a must read.

    Adrianne: “Why’d you do it?”

Rocky: “I just gotta do what I gotta do.”

A: “You don’t have to do anything.”

R: “No, Adrianne, I do, and I gotta leave this place to.”

A: “So, where are you going?”

R: “They said they were gonna let me train in Russia. And I just wanna go some place where I ain’t gonna think about nothing except him.”

A: “Give it some time. Don’t do this. A lot of people live with hurt.”

R: “Adrianne, a lot of people don’t have no choice, I do.”

A: “And for that, you’re willing to lose everything?”

R: “Adrianne, this ain’t everything. This house, the cars, and all this stuff we got, it ain’t everything. There’s a lot more than this.”

A: “Before there were reasons to fight I could understand, but I don’t understand this. Even if you win, what have you won? Apollo’s still gone. Why can’t you change your thinking? Everyone else does!”

R: “Cuz I’m a fighter. That’s the way I’m made Adrianne. That’s what you married. Can’t change what we are.”

    A: “Yes you can.”

R: “Can’t change anything Adrianne. All we can do is just go with what we are.”

A: “You can’t just go with what you are. Have you read the papers? Do you know what everybody says? It’s suicide. You’ve seen him. You know how strong he is. YOU CAN’T WIN!”

R: “Adrianne, Adrianne always tells the truth. No, maybe I can’t win. Maybe the only thing I can do is just take everything he’s got. But to beat me, he’s gonna have to kill me. And to kill me he’s gotta have the heart to stand in front of me. And to do that, he’s gotta be willing to die himself. And I don’t know if he’s ready to do that. I don’t know.”
So why don’t you just complacently sit back and settle for less than the best? Let everyone who puts you down stay happy. Don’t feel like working out? Just put on a dress and lay in front of the TV all night. Don’t wanna study? That’s OK, you were nothing before, you can be nothing forever. Go ahead, eat that Twinkie. You could never have a good body anyways.
Go prove ‘em wrong, you can do it.
