Chapter 11
Jeff ran down to the harbour as fast as he could.
He ran along the wall and looked in every place he could think of.
Finally Jeff saw a body lying by the edge of the
water right at the edge of the harbour.
“CLO!!” He shouted as he ran over t her. He
dropped by her and looked at her face. She was white as a ghost. He lifted her
body from the wooden planks. He pulled her against him and held her as tight
as he could. He rubbed his hands up and down his back trying to warm her. He
pulled his jacket of and put it around her. She still showed no signs of
waking. So Jeff picked her mobile up and hit the end button and stuffed it in
his pocket and then he picked her up and began to leave the harbour.
After fifteen minutes walking back to the hotel he
put her down in the lobby and asked the receptionist to call a doctor, which
she did. Jeff took Chloe back to his room and laid her on the bed. He turned
the room heating up and went back to her. He pulled a blanket up around her.
He sat at her side and held her against him. He placed a kiss on her forehead.
And rocked her in his arms as she slowly began to come round.
“She needs to rest sir, and she needs to be kept
warm.”
“Ok. Can I do anything else for her?” Jeff
asked the doctor. Who arrived about ten minutes after he was called.
“You can give her these.” He said as he handed
her the container of sleeping pills. “I can see she hasn’t been
sleeping.”
“No, she hasn’t. Not since the accident.”
“Well, those should help her.”
“Thank you.”
“And get her home as soon as you can. She needs
to be around people she knows, not in a strange place.”
“We were going to do but she ran off.”
“That’s how she ended up like this?”
“Yes. I had been looking for her all day.”
“Did she suffer any memory lose after the
accident?”
“Only that she can’t remember what
happened.”
“Was she ill before?”
“I don’t know. I don’t think so. Actually, a
friend of hers, Eddie, spoke to my brother and said she wasn’t herself.”
“Eddie Irvine?”
“You know him?”
“Everyone around here knows the drovers of
formula one. And we know all of what has happened to Chloe since the accident.
She’s a lucky girl.”
“I know.” Jeff said looking at Chloe sleeping
on the bed. “Something is troubling her and she won’t tell me.”
“Give her time.” The doctor said as he pulled
his coat on. “Are you her husband?”
“Yeh I am. Jeff Hardy.” He said as he extended
his hand.
“Carl O’Brien.” The doctor replied. “She
has a kid right?”
“Yeh three year old boy, Jamie.”
“Must be a handful.”
“He is.”
“You must be a proud man to have her as a wife
and a kid with her.”
“umm…Jamie’s not mine.”
“Oh, I’m sorry.”
“It’s ok. Everybody thinks that he is mine.
Can you do me a favour and not spread this stuff around?”
“Of course doctor patient confidentiality and
all that.” The older man said giving a reassuring smile.
“Jamie is my brothers kid.”
The doctor stood stunned. “Your brothers?”
“Yeh. Him and Chloe and a thing before we got
together and Jamie was the result of it.”
“I guess that courses a lot of stress for the
three of you?”
“It does at times. It’s been hard lately.”
“How so?”
“Well, with her racing and having Jamie with her
makes it harder to do well and she hasn’t been driving well lately. Then
after the race she flies back to America to be with me and so Matt, my
brother, can see Jamie and then she flies back to Europe for the testing, she
has Jamie then to, then after that she flies back to America to see us and
then she flies out to wherever the next race is.”
“Sounds stressful.”
“It is. Not just for her, we all feel it and it
gets too much, sometimes we all just snap and Chloe’s always on the end of
it.”
“Do you think the accident could have been
caused by stress?”
Jeff thought for a minute. “I guess it could
have been.”
“Think about it. I’ll see myself out. And
don’t worry I won’t tell a sole.”
“Thanks for everything.” Jeff said smiling as
he watched the doctor leave before he headed back to his wife.
