Chapter 10

Jeff sat on the tailgate, during his morning break. It
was extremely hot this morning. It was nine a.m. and
he had already shed his shirt. He wiped the sweat from
his forehead and that's when he saw the black Mercedes
pull up.

A tall dark haired gentleman wearing a navy blue
business suit made his way to the truck, "I'm looking
for Jeff Hardy."

Jeff knew who he was from the minute he looked at him,
"You found him."

"I'm Michael Morgan, Kendalls father." He reached his
hand out for Jeff's.

He reluctantly shook it, "Yeah I know who you are.
What can I do for you?"

"I won't beat around the bush, I want you to stay away
from my daughter." Michael eyeballed the youngster
wearing nothing but a pair of jeans and a whole lot of
sweat.

" I can't do that. I won't do that anyway." Jeff took
a drink from his water bottle never taking his eyes
off of her father.

Michael reached into his pocket, "Look my daughter has
a bright future ahead of her and someone like you will
just hold her down."

"Someone like me? You have no clue who I am Mr.
Morgan."

"I know your kind. You're what 19-20 maybe? You work
here.  You have a semi-wrestling career that will take
you no where. You have no ambitions in life and that's
why you hooked up with my daughter. You know she's the
heiress to a billion dollar company and if you get in
with her, it's smooth financial sailing for you." He
opened his wallet, pulling out a handful of hundred
dollar bills, "How much will it take to get you away
from her?"

Jeff was disgusted. He scowled, "I don't want your
money or your dumb business. I want your daughter.
She's all I care about. Can you say the same?"

"You watch your mouth young man." Michael pointed his
finger in Jeff's face, "Stay away from my daughter."

Jeff stood up to him, nose to nose, "When she tells me
to then I will. I won't be bullied by you."

"You just made a big mistake pal."

Jeff let out a deep sigh after Mr. Morgan left.

"You ok Jeff? Who the hell was that?" his boss stood
beside him watching the pull car away.

"My girlfriends father. Wait till she hears about
this." Jeff slipped off the truck to return to work.

Michael slammed the front door, cursing under his
breath. "Lucy! Fix me a scotch would you please?"

"Son."

Michael turned towards the voice in the living room,
"She called her grandfather. Lucy nevermind. I'll fix
it myself in the living room! Dad, you're here earlier
than expected."

His father leaned against the window sill. His own
suit coat unbuttoned his hand in his pocket. "What
have you done to my granddaughter? She called me
crying last night. Something I will not ignore."

"She shouldn't have."

"Yes she should have. When she hurts, I hurt. When she
cries, I cry. We're the same spirit her and I, and
I'll be damned if you go on one of your rampages and
break hers!"

"Dad this doesn't concern you. It's between Kendall
and myself."

His father made his way to him, staring him down as he
had done in the past. "It was until now. I'm gonna fix
this problem or you'll die as I'm trying. Sit your ass
down."

Michael sat down with a groan ready for the war of
words to begin.

Jeff waited for her on the hood of his car at the
entrance gate of the college. He purposely parked up
front so she would see him. His heart skipped a beat
as he saw her coming down the sidewalk. All she wore
was a plain white T-shirt, gray leggings and sneakers.
A flannel shirt tied around her wait, showing off her
little waist. He slipped off the car, holding roses
behind his back.

She saw him immediately, quickly rushing to him, "Hi
you. What a nice surprise." She dropped her bag by her
feet wrapping her arms around his neck, planting a
kiss on his lips.

"Hi." He kissed her a few more times. Once was just
not enough for him. He pulled her closer with his free
hand; "These are for you."

"Oh." She covered her mouth in surprise then smelled
the roses, "Roses. How did you know that I loved
these?" she giggled kissing him again.

"Every beautiful girl deserves roses. Now for some bad
news. I probably shouldn't be telling you this but you
have a right to know." He climbed back up on the car.

She leaned in between his legs, staring at him in
total confusion, "What's wrong Jeff?"

"Your father came to see me at work today."

"He what?" her voice went up a notch.

"He politely asked me to stop seeing you. When I told
him no, he went into some spiel about me latching on
to you because of money. Then he pulled out some money
and asked me how much it would take for me to leave
you alone. I told him I didn't want his money, all I
wanted was you. Then he ordered me to stop seeing you.
I told him that when you told me you didn't want me
anymore then I'd walk away." He saw the tears forming
in her eyes, "I'm sorry baby but you needed to know."

She wiped the tears away as he held onto her tightly,
"I'm sorry he did that to you. He had no right."

"You have nothing to apologize for. It was all your
father." He gently kissed her eyes then her mouth.

"I need to talk to him." She stepped away, grabbing
her bag; "I'll talk to you later okay."

"Wait baby you don't even have my number."

"Right okay." She searched through her bag frantically
grabbing a notebook and a pen, "Put it here." She
sniffed wiping away more tears. Her own father broke
her heart.

He scribbled it down, handing it back to her,
"Kendall?"

She sniffed again cramming the book into her bag,
"Yeah?"

"I love you."

She gasped quietly as he said it. She rose up from her
bag taking his face in her hands and kissing him, "I
love you too Jeff." She whispered, "I'll call you
later."

"Be careful!" he yelled after her as he watched her
race for her car, a knot in his stomach as she pulled
away.
