Chapter 12
“God, I am so nervous and I’m not the one out there.” Amy
said as she, Matt, Jeff and Gil watched the race from the Williams garage.
“I hope her knee will be ok.” Matt said as he took a sip of his
drink.
“I know, I don’t think she should be racing at all, not just
because of her knee.” Gil said as he looked watchfully over his two sons. Who
exchanged an unpleasant look.
In the commentary box for ITV (British TV station.) Murray Walker
and Martin Brundell waited for the start of the 2001 Canadian grand-prix.
“One red light, two, three, four, five and it’s go, go, go!!!!
In Montreal!!!!” Murray shouted as the cars pulled away from the starting
grid.
“Schumacher got a flying start, but look at Stevens, she’s up
to tenth after the first corner.”
“Yes, Chloe has the talent but because of her crash in qualifying
she didn’t qualify well enough and I don’t think it’s her day to finish in
the points.”
“I wouldn’t say that watch her go, she is up to eighth at the
end of lap one.”
“Lap 23 and in the pits come Coulthard, Barrichello and Stevens.
This is going to be close.” Murray said as the clocks began to count the pit
stop times.
“It’s a case of who gets it right. Ferrari hasn’t got a tyre
for Rubens!!! He has no back left tyre!!! That’s a disaster, it’s between
Stevens and Coulthard and it looks like, yes Stevens gets out in front of
Coulthard, that takes Chloe up to forth!!!” Martin said as he tried to calm
down a bit.
“Lap 45 of the Canadian grand prix, it looks like an easy day at
the office for Michael Schumacher.” Murray said as he sat back in his chair
awaiting a Schumacher win.
“I don’t know, Ralf Schumacher has a ten second stop go
penalty. This means Chloe is up to third and she has the pace to catch Hakkinen,
and then maybe Michael.” Martin said as he tried to reason with him but it was
going to work.
“I’d put my money on a Schumacher win.”
“Ok, I put mine on a Mika or Chloe win.”
“Loser by the pints to night.”
“You’re on.”
“Lap 50 out of 60. I am working up quiet a thirst Martin.”
“I’d take that back because Mika Hakkinen’s engine has just
caught fire and he is out of the race. This let’s Chloe up to second. She has
the pace, she has the pace to catch Schumacher, and all she has to do is just
has to keep her concentration.”
“Lap 58. And Schumacher still leads Stevens by 0.25 of a second.
With just two laps left can she do it?”
“I think she can but she needs to hurry. Times running out Chloe
come on, you can do this.” Martin said as he stood up and watched out the
window for a better look.
“She has to do it she has to do it now.” Martin said as the
Ferrari and Williams reached the second to last corner of the Canadian grand
prix. “She is in the final corner she is putting the nose of her car up the
inside of Michael and pushing him wide, make it stick Chloe!! She has!!!! Over
the finish line and Chloe Stevens wins the 2001 Canadian grand prix. I’m quiet
thirsty after that Murray!!” he teased. “ And a great result for Eddie
Irvine and Jaguar, he finished an amazing third!!! Well done Eddie and Chloe”
“WELL DONE!!” was all Chloe could hear over the radio whilst
she did her slowing down lap, she watched in her mirrors as her teammate Ralf
drove around in formation with her, she waved to the crowd and to the marshals
that we on the side of the track with the flags.
They held up the rest of the cars as the made the way back to park
fermay.
As she parked her car she undid her belts and took the steering
wheel of allowing her to climb out of the car. She stood up and stepped out and
raised her hands in the air and walked over to the crowd of Williams’s
mechanics she hugs each one separately and then moves to Jeff she hugs him then
Matt, Amy and Gil. She walks back to the car and takes her helmet of and
replaces the steering wheel. She gives her helmet to Ben and then Michael and
the Eddie congratulate her as the walk of to be weighed.
As Chloe stepped out onto the podium she jumped up to the top step
and raised her hands in the air, her smile was from ear to ear and she waved out
at the crowd of mechanics and the crowd of fans.
After the British national anthem Chloe received her trophy and
then her bottle of Champaign. She sprayed her mechanics but Michael and Eddie
got their bottles and poured them down the back of her race suit, making her
scream, because it was cold. She lifted her bottle in the air and poured it over
her face.
After endless press conferences and meetings Chloe and her
mechanics decide to go party to celebrate. They left the garage along with Matt
and Jeff, Amy and Gil had gone back to the hotel because Gil had an early flight
and Amy didn’t feel too good.
As they were drinking in a local bar they saw a couple of Jaguar
mechanics walk past, Chloe ran out side and shouted for them to join them, which
they did. The two teams partied all night, Chloe danced with everyone even Eddie
and most of the Jaguar team. Nobody could really say what happened after that
because they were a bit too drunk.
