Shane paced impatiently through the backstage hallways at
the arena. WWF Monday night RAW was going on, but at that moment his
mind was in Dallas. His wife, Meagan was in the hospital. Getting
ready to have his baby. HIS BABY! One of her friends had called
his cell phone earlier that afternoon to tell him she had went into labor.
But he couldn't be there. He had to hop a plane to get to the next arena
in time for the show that night.
Meagan would understand, he knew. They had talked
it over before. She knew that he had a job to do. And she
supported him on that. Never guilt tripping him into coming home.
But now they were adding a baby to the family. Shane ran a hand through
his tonsled hair. How was he going to juggle his family and his career?
Shane jumped when his cell phone rang. Meagan's
friend Julie's cell number showed up on his caller ID. "Congratulations
Dad. You have a baby boy! Jordan Lee McMahon." Julie
gushed on the other side of the line. Shane sagged against the wall in
relief.

My child arrived just the other day
He came to the world in the usual way
But there were planes to catch and bills to
pay
He learned to walk while I was away
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he
grew,
He'd say, "I'm going to be like you,
dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."
***
"Hey babe. How are you and Jordan?"
Shane asked over his cell phone. He was sitting in his hotel room,
staring at a picture of Meagan and six year old Jordan. "oh, we
are doing great. Jordan loves school. He's made lots of new
friends." Meagan chattered to her husband. "Can I
talk to him?" Shane asked.
He could hear Meagan calling their son to the phone.
Then his six year old voice came over the line. "Hiya
Daddy." Jordan greeted. "Hey Jordan. I miss you
so much. what are you doing in school?" Shane asked.
"Oh, today we had to say our ABC's in front of the whole class.
I got a gold star. And...And we had to tell what we wanted to be when we
growed up." Jordan explained. "And what do you
want to be when you grow up?" Shane asked his son, an amused grin
playing across his face. "I wanna be just like you daddy."

Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?"
"I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

"It's his tenth birthday, Shane. Can't you
leave for Vancouver tomorrow?" Meagan asked. "You
know I would if I could, but I have to be on the show tonight!" Shane
told her, throwing more clothes into his suitcase. "Well, then
you can be the one to tell him!" Meagan said in frustration.
Shane looked up as Jordan walked into the room with his
ball and glove. "Hey dad, wanna play catch with me?" Jordan
asked. "I'm sorry Jordan, but I can't. I just don't have
the time. I have to catch a plane and go to Canada to be in a show
tonight." Shane explained to his son.
Shane saw a look of disappointment cross Jordan's face
before he once again smiled up at his dad. "That's okay dad.
I understand." Jordan said, as he gave his dad a hug.
Then he turned and walked out of the room. Meagan following close
behind.

My son turned ten just the other day,
He say, "thanks for the ball, dad, come
on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said,
"Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said,
"That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never
dimmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah
You know I'm gonna be like him."
And the cats in the cradle and the silver
spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, dad?"
"I don't know when,
But we'll have a good time then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

"Hey pops! Are you glad to see your son?" Jordan
said as he walked in the front door. "Jordan! Son! What are you
doing home?!?" Shane asked as he got up from where he was reading
the paper at the kitchen table. "I Just came home for a quick
visit. I drove all day and I'm exhausted." Jordan grinned.
His father gave him a hug just as Meagan walked into the room.
"Jordan! How are you? We got your
grades. Dean's list. Good job!" Meagan beamed as
Jordan let go of his father and gave his mom a long hug. "Sit
down and talk to us." Shane urged but Jordan shook his head. "Sorry
dad. But I wanna go see the guys. Do you mind if I take your car?
I want to give mine a chance to cool down." Jordan smiled as his dad
handed over the keys.
***
Well, he came from college just the other
day,
So much like a man I just had to say
"Son I'm proud of you. Can you sit for
awhile?"
He shook his head and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow
the car keys.
See you later, can I have them please?"
And the cat's in the cradle and the silver
spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon
"When you coming home, son?"
"I don't know when
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

Shane stretched slowly as he got up from his favorite
chair. He was feeling lonely. His wife, Meagan, had passed away
three years ago. He glanced over at his calander and noticed that
today's date was circled in red. Today was Jordan's birthday.
He called Jordan's number. "Hey son. It's
your good ole dad calling to wish you a happy birthday. Do you have time
to talk?" Shane asked. "Sorry dad, I really don't.
I have to get up early to leave for another conference in L.A., plus the girls
have the flu. But I'll call you later, okay?" Jordan said,
before hanging up.
Shane sighed, "My son grew up to be just like
me." he told the empty room.
***
I've long since retired and my son's moved
away
I called him up just the other day
I said, "I'd like to see you if you
don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to dad, if I could
find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's
got the flu
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occured to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.
And the cats in the cradle and the silver
spoon
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home son?" "I
don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad,
You know we'll have a good time then."
