The Evil Redneck

The scene is familiar. The Cooper River moves onward in its huge bed. SAM dangles his legs from the side of the topmost beam on the largest set of towers. As little cars rush by at fifty five miles per hour or more below him, the wind whips at him, letting him sway back and forth in the air.

SAM spent the day watching promos from his opponents. Wafer had done some retarded episode with his buddy Smoke Dawg in which the two of them tried to mock Ichabod and Justin Payne. SAM thinks for a moment and then realizes that nothing in that interview had a damn thing to do with him.

I don't know what kind of tangent you've gone off on Wafer, but you better get your ass back down to earth quick fast and in a hurry. Playing games and joking around isn't going to get you in shape to face me any more than going to Wendy's and watching teenagers is. Maybe you're underestimating me, and you think that there is no real reason for you to put forth serious preparations for this match. That, my numb-minded friend, will be your undoing. You are making a really big mistake by not taking me seriously... but why am I even saying this? You don't listen to a damn word I say, you make jokes about everything you hear, and you just see things the way you want to see them, with King Wafer ruling forever. Newsflash, asshole, you aren't top dawg here in WOW, and you never will be. You've been here off and on for over a year, and you've yet to accomplish much of anything. So stop playing Mr. Big Shot and relax, play in the real world for a while.

SAM climbs to his feet and knocks the rust off his ass. He walks around the top of the tower back and forth across its central beam. He turns to his right and steps slowly down to the next level of crossbeams. As he walks he continues to speak.

Payne, you seem to be taking an intelligent approach to this match. You don't underestimate me, you acknowledge that I am not Ichabod, yet you still haven't accepted what it is I am saying.

When did you wrestle those guys you mentioned earlier? Yeah, it was back when you were in trouble. Did you beat them? You sure did, you even got rid of one of them to my recollection. Well, you had something to do with it. But what were you at the time, Payne? A fallen hero, somebody who became nobody. So you used these guys, who already didn't have a prayer, and you stepped up on their shoulders to climb back up. Don't give me your hypocritical crap saying that you do give people chances, because you don't. I'm not saying that you should wrestle these guys to give them chances. That's just a self defeating purpose, because lets face it, you're good. You're better than most of the guys in this place. How is putting an inexperienced person up against a seasoned veteran helping anything but to make them look foolish?

No, what I'm suggesting, Payne is that you step aside. Way aside, as in out of the picture. You are used up and your shelf life is way past prime. You've worn out your welcome here and its time to stop fighting and start learning. You want to help these people, teach them, help them, train them, but for God sakes, stay the hell out of their ways.

But you can't accept that or even concieve of leaving because you are afraid of your name dying out. So I'm going to have to come in and take you out, make you leave. If I have to break you, so be it. I want you out of the way, so I'm going to take you out of the way. Its the only way to do it. I know you love this sport, but there are other ways of being involved. You'd make a hell of a ring announcer. Or maybe a commentator. Hey, I got it, you can clean up that blood you love so much to spill. Welcome to being a janitor!

SAM begins to laugh maniacally as he continues to descend the tower. When he gets down to the base, he knocks on the window to wake the sleeping attendant. The attendant jumps and rubs his eyes. He recognizes the person who was on the top of the bridge a week ago and reaches for the telephone to dial the police. But SAM has already flagged a car down and thrown the driver out, speeding off toward Sullivan's Island.
