1989 saw the Stinger continue to thrill wrestling fans...
After a breakout year in 1988, Sting continued to impress fans with his sheer atheleticism and unmatched enthusiasm. The Venice Beach native captured the NWA World's Television Title early in the year by defeating The Varsity Club's Mike Rotunda. Sting then went on to turn back challenges by other Varsity Club members as well as many other opponents sucessfully defending the belt thoughtout the spring and early summer. The TV Title was held up following a match with The Great Muta at the Great American Bash in July. Sting lost a controversial rematch for the held up TV Title to Muta in Atlanta later in the year and the feud between the two spilled over into the heated feud between World Champion Ric Flair and Terry Funk. The four men met in several tag team contests with Sting and Flair getting the better of Gary Hart's stable inside an electrified cage at Halloween Havoc in Philadelphia. Sting finished the year by winning the Iron Man competition at Starcade in Atlanta with pinfall victories over The Great Muta and Ric Flair. Shortly after the new year Sting would severly injure his knee and miss several months after recontructive surgery.
