Distribution: Flights.
Notes: It's a late, late, late birthday present for my girl Kai!
"No," she said firmly, "it's totally unnecessary."
"But
it'll be fun."
"I don't think so."
"Please, let me do this for you."
"No
and that's my final answer."
Scott made a face at Cheryl's retreating back as she left for work. He watched her throw her suitcase and purse in the backseat and get into the front seat. As she backed out of the driveway, he picked up the phone and dialed a number he knew by heart.
"She's gone."
"Cool. We'll be over in five minutes."
Scott ran up the stairs and pulled a pair of track pants over his boxers and made it back downstairs just as the front door was opening. Kat, one of Cheryl's best friends, was coming into the house with her boyfriend Jeff Hardy in tow.
"Scott!" she shouted, "Where are you hiding?"
"I'm here," he said, pulling his tee-shirt over his head.
"Well," Kat said with a smile as she eyed the chest he was covering, "no one said you had to get completely dressed."
"You'll excuse my girlfriend," Jeff chuckled, covering her mouth with his hand, "she's insane."
"Tell me something I don't know."
"Hey
I'm helping you out here
if you whine, I can just as well walk right out of here."
"Fine, no need to get bitchy
here, I'll even take off my tee-shirt."
"Ooooh I'm suddenly feeling so full of energy," Kat giggled as she wrapped her arm around Scott's bare waist."
"Hey!"
"What?" Kat and Scott asked a pouting Jeff.
"I'm feeling left out," he explained as he whipped off his shirt.
"Oh wow
how many women can say they're this lucky?" Kat asked as she walked to the kitchen with Jeff and Scott in tow.
"Very few," Scott grinned, sitting down next to Kat at the kitchen table.
"So tell us what you have in mind for tonight?" Jeff asked Scott. "For Cheryl, I mean?"
"Well, I know she doesn't want a big shindig and it's too late to pull that off anyhow. I was thinking something more private, like with just the four of us as a nice restaurant."
"It'd be cool with me but the second we show up here all dressed up, she'll know."
"Which is where Jeff and I were talking, we figured we'd take you two out for a bike ride and then pop up at the restaurant. I called ahead and let them know and they give us a private room."
Kat looked from Jeff to Scott, unable to get away from the feeling that she had missed a little something.
By the time Cheryl got home from the Marriott hotel she managed, her feet were aching from standing for hours on end and her jaw was sore from having spent too much time smiling at idiot clients who wanted the moon, the stars and the sun up above.
"Scott! I'm home!"
"Hey Cher," Scott said, coming down the stairs. "Wanna go out?"
Cheryl frowned and looked her boyfriend up and down, his long curly hair pulled back in a ponytail, wearing soft blue jeans that looked almost white from too many washings. He had on a black Spiderman tee-shirt with his black leather jacket.
"Uh, where are you going?"
"Jeff and I are going out for a bike ride and Kat got herself invited. So, wanna come?"
"You're going out?" Cheryl asked, "Tonight?"
"Yeah. Listen, I gotta head out, they're waiting for me. I'll see you when I get home?"
"When will that be?"
"I don't know
eleven, midnight
you know how things get when we hit the open road."
"But today's my birthday."
"I know honey but when you insisted to me and Kat that you didn't want to do anything about it, we figured we might as well listen to you."
"So you're just taking off, just like that?"
"Well, like I said, feel free to come."
Cheryl thought about it
she could stay at home and enjoy a peaceful hour in the hot tub, by herself, or she could spend the next few hours on a loud piece of machinery, her legs and arms tightly wrapped around her man's body.
"Give me a minute?"
"I'll even give you five."
Kat was sitting on Jeff's bike, straddling his hips and kissing him passionately when Scott and Cheryl got to her house. It took her a solid minute before managing to get Jeff to release his very possessive hold on her hips.
"Mmm, honey, Scott and Cher are here."
Jeff groaned loudly before turning to the new arrivals, "It's about time."
"Sorry. Cheryl had to get changed."
"Hey girl," Kat said, getting off Jeff's bike and going over to her friend and hugging her tightly. "How you doing?"
"Let's just say I needed this
to get away, you know?"
"I hear ya. Boys, where are you taking us?"
"Just get your butt on the bike and trust us," Jeff said.
"Men," Kat laughed as she got on Jeff's bike and put on her helmet.
Scott and Jeff took to the highway with the girlfriends behind them, taking control of the highway. They wound their way around small country roads, getting closer and closer to the ocean, surprising even Kat who thought she was in on Cheryl's surprise. When the bikes came to a stop on a beautifully moonlit beach, Kat slid off the bike and turned to Jeff, cocking her head in question
"What is this?"
"Well sweetie, you're not the only one who can keep secrets."
Shaking her head and kissing Jeff's neck, Kat turned to Cheryl, "I had nothing to do with this
thank our men."
"Will do. Is this for my birthday?" she asked.
"Sure
when you said you didn't want to do anything, I figured you mean the big birthday stuff with surprises and shit so I settled. You like?"
"It's likable."
Scott let out a long whistle and to the girls' surprise, a lighted gazebo appeared on the beach, complete with a couple of waiters and a string quartet.
"Wow
impressive."
"Thanks, I try," Scott told Kat with a wink.
Grinning, the guys took their girlfriends to the gazebo, helping them into chairs and sitting next to them.
"Jeff and I got to talking and we worked on a little project for you two."
"You did?"
"Yep. I got some help from my new friends at Marvel Comics and cooked this up for the two of you."
With a flourish, he presented the women with a comic book. The minute they saw the cover, Kat and Cheryl burst out laughing and looked at their men.
"Which of you drew these?" Cheryl asked pointing at the extremely well-endowed drawings of her and Kat.
"Jeff did!" Scott said quickly.
"Hey!"
"I like," Kat said with a thoughtful look, "that how you see me?"
"Uh
yeah
"
"Very nice."
Giggling, Kat and Cheryl devoured the comic book where they were cast as witty superheroes who fought two bad boys, who looked suspiciously like their boyfriends, and tamed them into submission. Still laughing, they close the book and Kat looked at Jeff and Scott, "Don't think I don't like this comic book because I do but this isn't my birthday
it's Cheryl's."
"We know
but baby, when you and I started dating, I'd just missed your birthday and
"
"And you made it up to me
very sweet
you'll be appropriately rewarded," Kat told Jeff with a wink.
"What do I get?" Scott asked eagerly.
"I'm letting you have sex with one of my friends. I'd say that's a pretty awesome present."
"She's your present to me?"
"Pretty cool huh?"
"Baby, you're ok with that? Being a present?"
"Well, since I get to end up in your bed at the end of the day, who cares?"
Scott laughed and kissed Cheryl. Jeff watched them with a smile and tugged on Kat's hand, "Come on, let's go for a walk."
Kat waved at Cheryl and shouted to her as Jeff dragged her away, "I'll give you my present later."
"Alone at last," Scott sighed, kissing her neck.
"Mmm
Mr. Mystery
I had no clue you were going to do this tonight."
"That was the point. The waiters are going to serve dinner in a few minutes. But before they do, I got something to ask you."
"Scott, if you ask me to marry you, I swear to God
"
"Marry you? Huh
do I look nuts?"
"Yeah
"
"Well, I ain't that crazy yet
ugh
marriage
why the hell did you have to bring it up anyhow? Now I wanna throw up or something."
"My bad," Cheryl giggled, "now I take it you wanted to say something?"
"Yeah
I mean, you and I have been together for what--two years now?"
"About that, yeah."
"I was thinking
how would you feel if I gave you a present?"
"For my birthday? Gee Scott, I'd hate that."
"Stop being a smart ass
I was thinking of getting you a special present."
"Special how?"
Scott nodded to a waiter and he brought over a large box which he set down on the ground next to the couple. Scott raised the lid and scooped out a tiny little cocker spaniel with long floppy ears. Its coat was a deep caramel brown and it had sleepy chocolate brown eyes.
"Oh Scott
" Cheryl whispered, gently scratching the back of the puppy's neck.
"I mean, it's ours
mine and yours but he's your present
but I'd walk him and I'll even pay for that school so it doesn't shit all over the house."
Cheryl wasn't paying any attention to Scott anymore. She'd scooped the puppy out of his arms and was now playing with him as he busied himself by licking at her face. That's when Kat and Jeff came back.
"You do realize that dog probably was licking his own ass before slobbering all over you, right?" Kat asked.
"Cats do that," her boyfriend corrected, "not dogs."
"Right
dogs drink from the toilet, which is like way more sanitary."
Cheryl stuck her tongue out to her friend before turning to Scott and planting a long kiss on his lips, smooching the puppy between them.
"Man, look how adorable he is," Jeff said, waving at the dog.
"No."
"I'm not saying anything except that the dog looks really adorable."
"Jeff, let me say this for the hundredth time, we are not getting a dog."
"Why not?"
"Because you enjoy sex," Kat said with a mischievous smile.
"We are so not getting a dog," Jeff said with a vigorous nod of his head.
"I thought so."
While Kat and Jeff decided on not getting a puppy, Scott and Cheryl stared in each other's eyes, sharing looks of love and commitment, their puppy stuck between them.
"I think I'm going to name him Spot," Cheryl said after a little while.
"I was thinking for something like Edgar."
"Edgar? For a puppy?"
"Like Edgar Allen Poe maybe?"
"We are not calling my dog Edgar."
"I thought he was our dog?"
"You gave him to me so I get to name him and my dog's name is not going to be Edgar."
"Well, I'm not calling him Spot either."
"Let's go for another walk," Kat said, pulling on Jeff's hand
this might take a while."
While Jeff and Kat disappeared over a sandy dune, Cheryl and Scott argued about the dog's name. But no matter how long they argued, they kept on loving each other and that was the most important thing.
