Part 1:
"Me? What are you, nuts? I can't do that."
"I'm sure you can. It's not hard. And you've seen me do it often enough, no?"
"I can't!"
"Why not?"
"Well
because
"
"Yes?"
"I just can't do it all right?"
"No, not all right. You can do it, and you will."
"I happen to think you're wrong."
"I'm the expert. You're doing it."
Three months later
"Didn't I say you could do it? I think I said you could do it and wouldn't you know it? You did it!"
"I just
I look so big!"
"Of course you do
it's a billboard
what did you think? You'd be life-size?"
"It'd make me look smaller
"
"You don't look big
you look stunning
and very sexy and appealing too."
"You're family
you have to say that."
"True
but still, as a professional, I think you look good
and think about it
don't you think the billboard couldn't have been placed better?"
Rolana and I turn around and look at WWF New York, which my billboard, advertising my new monthly column in
Cosmo.
"It is a rather prime location, yes."
"Bet it'll make him grind his teeth every time he'll pass by it and see it."
"So what?" I ask her. "He's part of my past. And he wasn't that bad a boyfriend
just wasn't that great, that's all."
"Well, you know who was great?"
"Oh please don't start that again."
"I'm telling you
he liked you
as more than just a friend
"
"No he didn't. And the man's got two relationships already. He's married and he has a lover, remember?"
"I still say there's more to it than that."
"Rolana, I haven't spoken to him in over a year. Let it go
"
"No way
I'm putting that man in your bed if it kills me."
"Then I'm sad to say that you will die
"
"Little bitch."
"You're such a flatterer!" I chuckle.
Rolana and I walk away, not before I turn and look at the WWF restaurant one more time. It feels so weird
over a year ago, I'd been right there with Andrew, bringing in 2002 in style and now
now I'm on a billboard, the new fashion critic and columnist for
Cosmopolitan magazine. I have my own fame and I'm loving it. Part of it
well, a lot of it, I owe to Ro and her fabulous contacts in the world of fashion. All it took was for an editor of
Cosmo to listen to my rather pointed fashion comments while we were at an Oscar party and bam! I was hired. It's a rush really. And since I've already been compared to the infamous Mr. Blackwell for my deadpan wit, I'm feeling pretty happy, you know?
"So
will you attend?"
"Attend what?"
"The fashion show at WWF NY
are you going to attend or make pretty excuses?"
"I don't know. They'll all be there and you know the story will resurface."
"I know but you knew it would come out sooner or later."
"I know
but I was hoping I could avoid it for as long as humanly possible."
"Sorry girlie
no dice
"
"Oh hell
"
"It'll be fine, I'm sure."
"I wish I could be quite as sure."
Part 2:
The venue is a good one, especially for the charity fashion show which will have WWF superstars showing off clothes from various young designers. I'm sitting in the front row with several other fashion critics I've gotten close to in my four-month run. They're very dismissive of the show beforehand and I can't help but get mad at them for that. Yeah, the WWF doesn't have the best reputation and their wrestlers aren't models but it's not a bad project, especially considering the fact that it's a great way of a boost to young designers.
Finally, Marissa Mazola McMahon, the emcee for the evening, comes out and introduces the fashion. When I see them, the people I knew in another life that seems so long ago, I have a flashback to the fashion shows I'd been a part of during my high school years. They're smiling like I had smiled, woodenly as if they're afraid of tripping all over their feet. The only person who seems remotely comfortable and at ease is Trish and it shows. She knows her stuff.
While I check out the clothes, my pen is very busy on my pad of paper, jotting down notes while I direct my photographer by gently pressing my knee into his back. It's a nervous reaction more than anything else. He knows his stuff but he lets me do it nonetheless, giving me an unnecessary sense of power and purpose.
Ninety minutes later, the show's done and I'm sitting at a table, making a draft of my column while the clothes, the cuts and the colors are still fresh in my mind. I'm lost in thought when two men plop down in the chairs next to me. I look up and I grin happily.
"Boys!"
"You have totally dropped off the face of the earth! And then BAM, you're on a billboard? Without telling us?"
"I'm sorry. I've been so busy with the magazine and everything
"
"Unacceptable," Adam smiles. "You dumped Sabertooth, not us."
"Aw
I'm sorry boys. Any chance of me being forgiven?"
"Well
"
"There you are," Scott Levy says, joining us.
"Scott, this is Kat
"
"Andrew's ex! Yeah, I remember you
I wasn't there the day you clocked him but from what I hear, it was deserved."
"Yeah well
"
"So what brings you here?" Scott asks me, drawing closer to one of the boys.
"She's the new fashion critic for
Cosmo
she's going to write about tonight."
"Did you like the show?"
"I actually did. It was good, fresh
"
"Cool," he says a bit dismissively, "Jason, some of my friends made it and I'd like you to meet them. Let's go?"
"All right. Kat, we'll talk later, all right?"
"Sure
"
Frowning, I watch Jason walk away with Scott and I turn to Adam. He lets out a big sigh.
"What was that?" I ask him.
"Jason's with Scott now. We split up about five months ago."
"What happened?"
"The magic left. We're still best friends
we just don't share a bed anymore."
"I'm sorry Adam."
"What can I say? It's a year of breakups."
"Meaning?"
"Alannah got divorced."
"Why?"
"It wasn't working out for us. She knew the reality, understood it but realized she wanted more out of life and me."
"I am so incredibly sorry Adam."
"Pity, Kat? I can do without that."
"I'm sorry both her and Jason are missing out on you."
"Aw
"
"See, I'm not always a bitch."
"Just most of the time
"
"Funny
"
"I think so. I've missed you."
"Well, I've missed you guys too."
"So tell me
what's been happening with you?"
"Besides the writing career and the new found stardom?"
Adam smiles at me then and I chuckle along with him. He covers my hand with him and I realize how much I've really missed him.
Part 3:
So dancing to India Arie's
Brown Skin while I'm in the arms of a blond hunk of a man who could have been a Viking in a past life isn't exactly what the song is about but it's a great slow song and he's the perfect guy to dance to it to. First of all
his height is perfect. True, I'm not wearing the highest heels but our heights are perfect for each other. And with his arms tight around me as we sway to the music
it feels so good.
"May I cut in?"
"Actually," I lie as I look up at Andrew, "my feet hurt so
I'm going to have a seat with Adam. See ya."
"Never figured you for a coward," Adam laughs at me when I join him at our table.
He's looking at the dance floor where the two Canadian blondes I just left there are trying not to look too stupid.
"Poor Jason," I sigh. "I wouldn't stick him with Andrew unless I had another choice."
"He'll be fine."
"You're sure?"
"Sure
look, Scott's already come to his rescue."
"Some people are too lucky," I whisper as I look at Scott as he nibbles on Jason's earlobe as they walk off the dance floor and into the crowd.
"Tell me about it."
"You miss him, don't you? Jason, I mean."
"I miss what we had
the companionship
the shoulder to put my head on
"
"The sex?"
"I'm not dead
of course I miss the sex
don't you?"
"What makes you think I'm not having sex?" I ask Adam as I lick my lips.
"Oh my God, you've met someone! Kat, why didn't you tell me?"
"There's nothing to tell."
"Sure there is. What's his name?"
"Red Devil."
"Huh?"
"Only companion I have is a vibrator darling."
"Nasty
"
"But practical
no STDs and I don't get pregnant."
"True
men don't always have that option."
"Oh go to a sex shop darling. They have rubber pussies and everything
"
"Nastier!"
As Adam and I laugh, I see Andrew making his way to us.
"Ugh
the man just doesn't know how to give up. Come on!"
"Hey where
Kat!"
We hit the dance floor just in time for an old school reggae song
Tell ya about a girl named Maxie
"I can't dance to this
" Adam whines.
I laugh and I stand in front of him, pressing his hips into mine as I start moving to the beat. Soon enough, he's got the right rhythm down pat and I turn around and I start grinding just like in the old days, pressing my hips and butt into his crotch. When he hesitates, I take his hands and put them on my hips as I keep on moving. Evidently, the DJ's fond of reggae because he keeps on hitting us with Shabba Ranks and Shaggy and The Wailers. Finally, Adam walks away, leaving me to bump and grind with a fellow reporter. I join him at the table and he seems like he's about to leave.
"Where are you going?"
"Back to my hotel."
"Are you all right?"
"No
come here for a second."
As Adam drags me through the restaurant, I realize that Rolana might have been right about him. And I'm thrilled. It's been so long since
well
since Andrew
and
I miss being touched and
who knows? Maybe with another wrestler
what is it about me that attracts them? Whatever it is, right now, I love it.
Part 4:
Finally, we're in a private dressing room in the back of the restaurant and he pulls me down on the couch and pulls the pins out of my hair.
"You're messing with my hair," I say softly, stopping his hands.
"Sue me," he replies, looking very serious and focused.
Finally, my hair's down and he plunges his fingers into the thick mass, bringing it forward on my shoulders to frame my face.
"Adam
"
"Yeah?"
"What are you doing?"
"I'm thinking about something."
"What?"
"Mainly you."
"What are you thinking?"
"That you're beautiful."
"Seriously."
"I am serious. I mean, when I first saw that billboard, I stopped and I stared at it for hours on end
it was like I was seeing you for the first time."
"That's because you weren't really seeing me. That picture was digitally enhanced."
"They were working off a beautiful canvas."
"Adam
"
"You seem to forget how often Jason and I walked in on you and Andrew when you used to come on the road with him. I've seen you with eyes crusty with sleep and
"
"Ok, if you're trying to seduce me, I suggest you go with a different approach."
"It's just
you're beautiful, you're strong and you're smart and I think I'm in love with you."
"Now I know you're crazy. You can't be in love with
"
It happens just like in the movies. You know when the devilishly handsome hero realizes how much he loves his
Plain Jane sidekick/partner? That's what I feel like, like the Plain Jane sidekick. And when Adam's lips cover mine, it's like
WOW! His mouth feels so soft on top of mine as he stares deep into my eyes. It's a soft kiss, very chaste and soft and reserved. And it thrills me right down to my toes. The feel of his thumbs rubbing the soft skin behind my ears makes my toes curl and I close my eyes. If we were standing up, my foot would be up in the air.
"So?" he asks me, pulling away from me.
"Why did you stop?"
"Because the point is to drive you crazy with desire," he whispers as he lays a series of gentle kisses along my lips.
I try to deepen the kiss but he keeps on moving out of my way, smiling the whole time.
"Adam!"
"What?"
"Stop that! Let me kiss you."
"Is that what you want?"
"No
I want you to come back to my apartment for a night of wild monkey sex but kissing will do in the meantime
"
"It'd better."
"Meaning?" I ask breathlessly while he trails kisses down my throat to my chest.
"I'm not going to your apartment tonight."
"Excuse me?"
He says something into my breast and I pull on his hair, making him look up at me.
"What did you just say?"
"I said I'm not going to your apartment tonight."
"So we're going to go back to your hotel room?"
"I am, yeah. I'm guessing you'll be going back to your apartment. Come on, let's go."
Adam gets up and offers me his hand, "I want to dance with you again."
"Horizontal mambo?" I ask with a grin.
"Nope
vertical whatever
"
"Adam, it's not fair
you get me all worked up and confused about
us, I guess and now we're supposed to just dance?"
"Yes
"
"Take me back to your hotel," I whisper, launching myself into his arms, grinding my crotch into his, "we'll sweat pounds off each other
"
"Tempting
"
"How tempting?"
"Very tempting. But not enough for me to change my mind."
"Please?"
Without saying another word, Adam pushes me out of the room and through the restaurant until we're back on the dance floor. Jason and Scott are on us right away, sneaking looks over their shoulders.
"Where did the two of you disappear to?" Scott asks. "Andrew's been talking to us!"
"And that's a bad thing?"
"It's not a good thing. He's looking for you and
you two have been making out!" Jason points at us and eyes my ruined hair with a smile. "It's about damn time."
"Yeah well
he's a tease!"
"Too much information," Scott chuckles.
"Well, he's not putting out so I'm thinking I should dump him for somebody hornier."
"Oh, I'm horny baby."
"True, but you're old."
"You were right Jason, she is a bitch."
"Hey, that's my
" Adam starts.
"Your what?" I ask, turning around to look at him, Jason and Scott following suit.
"My
dance partner."
"Coward."
"Oh yeah. And it's my turn to dance with her," Scott announces, pulling me to the dance floor.
"Hey, hands off my
"
"Dance partner?" I hear Jason ask snidely. I look up at Scott and I see he's trying to figure out how loud he's going to have to be for me to hear him.
"SO ADAM AND YOU ARE FINALLY HOOKING UP?"
Naturally, there has to be a lull in the music just then and everyone around us hears his question.
I laugh at his embarrassment and he sticks his studded tongue out at me.
"So are you?" he asks more quietly.
"I don't know
he's not putting out and he's making this whole thing a bit weird."
"Putting out? What are you, a guy trapped in a woman's body?"
"You're not the first person to tell me that. But it's true. He gets me all worked up and it gets nowhere."
"Wasn't it your first kiss?"
"Exactly. He's an amazing kisser and he's making me want more of his amazing sugar
"
"You have a mental problem, you know?"
"Yes
it gives me flava!"
"Ok, I'm cutting in," I hear Andrew say behind me. "I know your feet don't hurt."
"Fine," I finally relent, "you're cutting in."
Scott leaves reluctantly but I smile at him, letting him know it'll be ok. And my prayers go to hell when the DJ hits us with
Careless Whisper.
"You like that song, right?"
"Yeah. What do you want Andrew?"
"To talk
to congratulate you. I saw the billboard out in front. Looks pretty good."
"Thanks."
"Your career's really taking off."
"Yeah, it is."
"I'm glad
you deserve it."
"Yeah, I do."
"Yeah."
I look up at Andrew and I see our past together
the first time we'd met at my old job and my heart melts a little, especially when I remember how much I loved him. And somewhere in my heart and soul, I still do. I sigh and put my head down on his chest, knowing that no matter what happens, tomorrow morning, I'm going to wake up with a handsome blond wrestler in my bed.
Part 5:
So my blond wrestler ended up in my bed after all. And I barely had to work to get him there. And what's more, once he got there, there was no getting him out. You should have seen the look on Rolana's face when she saw him walk out of my bathroom wearing nothing but a towel. It was somewhere between deep shock and appreciation. And when you stop and think about it, it's a normal reaction. I went to do a review, not bring home a new fuck friend.
Anyhow, it's been over three months and it's pretty cool. It's not every woman who gets to date two wrestlers in a row. But I'm enjoying it
yes ma'am! I'm out there cheering on my man whenever my schedule allows it. What can I say? It's almost a love thing
but not quite.
So tonight, the WWF has a show at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and since I had to review a premiere in Hollywood, I decided to surprise him at the airport and welcome my baby in style. So I'm sitting in the lounge in front of a window that gives a perfect view of their gate and I'm waiting for him while I'm trying to come up with my next column.
I close my eyes and suck on my cigar (it's a new bad habit) and try coming up with the right words. But they're not playing fair, the words I mean, so I give it up and look out to the gate and watch the people and try guessing where they're coming from. I get distracted by an adorable little boy who's playing with a Mickey Mouse doll and I get shocked out of my skin when my eyes are covered by manly hands.
"Guess who?"
"I don't guess
"
"Come on
it'll be fun
"
"Jason?"
"No
"
"Adam?"
"No
"
"Scott?"
"No
"
"Who then?"
"Me."
I turn around and smile up at Paul Levesque. I might not like the way things ended with him and Joanie but it's none of my business and he's always been nice to me.
"Well, color me shocked. What's up?"
"Shocked?" he smiles as he sits next to me, "why?"
"I don't know
we've never really gotten to know each other, you know?"
"Yeah, I do. And even now, I've got to admit that my motive for coming over to talk to you is somewhat self-serving."
"Um ok
what can I do for you?"
"You know, when Andrew cheated on you, I sympathized with him because a lot of people gave me the cold shoulder when I cheated on Joanie."
"Ok
I knew you were one of the few people who didn't give him hell about it."
"Well, I know what it felt like to be in his shoes. Been there, done that and all that stuff."
"I guess."
"Anyhow, I'm kind of curious. What happens when
I mean, what does it feel like?"
"To be cheated on?"
"Yeah? If you don't mind talking about it."
"It's cool. I mean, I'm over it, mostly. Anyway, when I saw Stacey and Andrew together, I don't know
I felt so dumb for driving all the way to Albany to meet him, especially when he'd been such an ass about me coming up there to join him."
"Why dumb?"
"Because I caved, you know? I'm a strong, take-charge kind of woman, at least I like to think I am, and I just came running when he called. I walked all over my pride and even ditched my friend to meet him there and
God, still makes me mad to think about it."
"Okay," he says softly, looking lost in thought.
"She cheated on you, didn't she? Stephanie?" I watch him take a deep breath and avoid my eyes. I don't need him to answer. "How did you find out?"
"I walked in on them."
"Oh, that's gotta suck!"
"Didn't feel too good."
"I know it's none of my business but I gotta ask
who was it?"
"Uh
"
"Listen, you don't have to tell me
"
"Kevin
"
"Nash?"
"Yeah
"
"Wow!"
"Wow?"
"He's hot but I wouldn't dump you for him."
"Well, that's good to know
"
"Sorry. How did you react?"
"I don't know if I'm ready to react yet."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, I think I love her."
"Do you think she loves you?"
"That's what I don't know."
"Are you
in love with her?"
"
"
"Paul, I'm not Ann Landers, you do realize that, right?"
"Yeah
sorry. I'm just in shock. I really didn't expect this situation."
"I bet Joanie didn't expect it either," I tell him sharply.
"Ouch! Hitting a man while he's down?"
"Aw
is that a bad thing?"
"You don't like me, do you?"
"I barely know you. And you've never been mean to me. But what can I say? I love Chyna, I admire Joanie and you suck for having cheated."
"Not a lot of people have told me that to my face."
"Most of them are afraid of annoying the head writer's boyfriend."
"Probably. So what now? I clock her like you did Andrew?"
"That's a fun option but bear in mind, that twit offered to let me hit him
what was I going to say? No?"
"If she offers?" Paul asks me with a boyish grin.
"I'd advise against it."
"If you're sure
"
"I kind of am," I chuckle.
"Do you ever get over it?"
"Being cheated on?"
"Yeah?"
I look up at the gate and see Andrew standing there with Stacey while she's talking up a storm with Torrie Wilson and her fiancé, Billy Kidman. He looks at peace with himself I suppose, not especially happier or unhappier than when he was with me. I kind of wish he did though, just as proof that I meant something to him.
"I don't know. It's a deep wound, you know? A slap in the face that sends the message that you're just not good enough, no matter what happens."
"Yeah. I'm sorry if I'm bringing up bad memories."
"It's ok."
Part 6:
"Hey beautiful."
Jason and Scott join us at the small table and I close the lid on my laptop while Scott steals my cigar and starts smoking it.
"That's a Cuban?" he asks me.
"Being Canadian's gotta be good for something."
"Nice."
"So what's up?" Jason asks me.
"I'm waiting on your
brother."
"Ah
I saw him talking to Matt Hardy."
"No hurry. I've got great company."
"That's right
you do. So beautiful," Jason asks me, "when are you dumping him for me?"
"Never?"
"Oh come on
I'm cuter."
"Well
let me think about it
no!"
"What's going on children?" Adam asks as he joins us.
"Well, let's see if I'm keeping up," Scott says, "I think my boyfriend was trying to find out when your girlfriend was going to dump you for him and when we came in, said girlfriend was having an intimate conversation with Paul here."
"Is that so?"
"Yeah, he's got it right."
"Well gosh darn it, you're nothing but a whore! I still love you."
Adam grins at me and leans over, planting a long kiss on my lips. I reach behind his head and deepen the kiss, enjoying the way he groans into my mouth while gently rubbing the soft spot behind my ear.
"Miss me?" he asks me.
"Yep
loads."
"We're out of here," Adam says, pulling me to my feet. "This chick and I need private time."
As we leave, I hear Paul, Scott and Jason mumble it not being fair and about how Adam should be a good boy and share me.
"You're looking hot for 8 o'clock in the morning," Adam tells me as I lead him to my rented car.
"Thanks. I was dressing to impress."
"Me?"
"Do I care about anyone else?"
Adam nuzzles my neck as we walk, while gently squeezing my waist. On the way to the car, I see Stephanie with Kevin Nash standing together, talking rather intimately. I smile broadly at the McMahon brat and bump into Trish while she's on her cell phone.
"Yep," I hear her say, "dumped him for Kevin Nash
it's not official though
of course it's coming."
"Sorry Trish," I say with a smile.
"It's ok."
"That Joanie?" Adam asks.
"Yeah."
"Tell her thanks for me."
"Uh?"
"I was at her
Lane Bryant show and bought myself some lingerie," I explain, "he loved it."
"I see. Joanie, Adam wants to thank you
his girlfriend bought some
Lane Bryant lingerie after your show and he's enjoying it
yeah
Joanie says she did it just for you
"
"Thanks Joanie!" Adam shouts.
"I'm taking him away," I chuckle. "And tell Joanie I'm reviewing the show in next month's edition of
Cosmo. She's going to love what I have to say about it."
"Thanks Kat
yeah, the
Cosmo columnist
she's really nice
anyhow, I'm in down
what are we doing for fun?"
On the way to the hotel, I watch Adam's hand it leaves the wheel to settle on my knee. He's not trying to raise the hem or anything
just looking for human contact and I love that about him
about us
how we are together
softly
tenderly
lovingly
sappy even. With Andrew, I felt loved and safe but with Adam, I feel the love, I feel the safety and there's something else
something different
something that unites us in a different way
Tenderness
yeah, that's it. We're tender with each other, careful of each other's feelings and of each other's love. It does our souls good
a lot of good. And I'm glad that Andrew came into my life that day over a year ago
because if he hadn't, I wouldn't have met Adam and that would have been a tragedy.
